Put away for another season...

They're calling for snow here thursday and the leaves are piling up on my yard and driveway. There will still be a few good days yet, but other things are demanding my attention and I hate to do this too-late. Still need to put some fuel stabilizer in the tank and it would have been nice to rinse it off and wipe it down one last time but....oh well.  I turn 60 this coming January and my reasons for having this car keep coming into question.  I could sell it and perhaps beat the rush (all collector cars are somewhat threatened by the baby boomers heading for the exits) but I can't seem to pull the trigger on that one.  I  certainly don't drive it with the frequency I used too, but it isn't any less fun when I finally do. If I did happen to sell it, I'd only use the money to buy another SUV for the family to abuse for the next 6 or 7 years anyway.  It would be weird not having it sitting out there in the garage after all this time but..... I've had some folks that were close to me pass in the last year and that really gets you to think about things. It truly sucks to get old.

I hit 70 in February.  You're still a youngster, but I know what your saying.......

I see the issue of getting old as only being a problem if your health starts to degrade. AT almost 52, I feel great. Plenty of energy, plenty of desire as well.
If your back hurts, if the knees are sore, if you can't see or need to be near a toilet all the time then I can understand. If you are healthy physically but move slower than before, deal with it as best as you can. Life is for the living, not for sitting on the couch until your heart stops beating.   :2thumbs:

It is that time of year!  Lots to do and all the toys to put away . . .  :rotz:

I've been thinking about that lately.  I went to fall Hershey AACA meet this year.  Never saw so many guys on scooter chairs.  I know I'll be there one day.

Age is just a number. I turn 51 in March. I'm bald, ugly and beat down from the service. Fuck growing old and fuck winter storage! Drive you car on dry roads in the winter and enjoy life is what I say  I'm in Colorado and live at 8500', we do get snow. I start my car every weekend in the winter. Don't care if there is snow on the ground. Wait, you are worried about rust? Gotta keep the body shop guys busy.  :2thumbs:

Very true.....I'm a tiny bit older ...51 in January...but tall, dark handsome...and incredibly modest! Luckily I still have all my own teeth and most of my hair (bit silvery at the sides now though!). I'm probably fitter than I've ever been (did the Great South Run the other week ...ten miles in about 1 hr 22...my pb). You just gotta get out there and do it. My dad is 74 and works the land doing the same job he's done since he was 14...now he probably could not run ten miles but he can lift more than me and crush me in an arm wrestle. We don't smoke at all (I never have) or drink to excess .....often! I intend to be as active as him when I get there...with a little luck. He's my inspiration to stay fit and keep active. He says that it's not getting old that stops you doing things, is stopping doing things that make you get old! Wise advice. He took up offshore per boat racing when he was 60.... just for fun....he came second in the world championships in Norway four years later!....I said he was healthy..I never said he was sane!
Now BOT I'm glad we don't have the weather that makes it really makes it necessary to mothball cars in the winter (at least driver standard ones).....but I bet a lot more are not used in the winter that really could be. Hell, I knew a guy at my work that had a fatal heart attack at 36 this very year.....so how do you know you will even be around to drive that car next spring! We a have a British comedian called Jethro (goggle him...he is very funny but I'm not sure that he will cross the Atlantic that well...very British humour).....he always finishes his act saying "Live every day as though it was your last day on Earth....because one day you will be bloody well right". So get out there and drive those cars...at the very least you can laugh at us who are still a good way from being able to drive ours!

I have grown tired of being a twat about my car. I am going to replace the HVAC system, pull the windshield to properly seal it and DRIVE the car whether it rains or not. Hell yeah, 4 season car? Why the hell not ?   :2thumbs:

Cool...I would like to think I will have the same attitude when I'm finished (especially in a country where the only difference between summer and winter is that the rain is a few degrees warmer in the summer !). But with the time/money I would have spent on her it might be different when is actually happens. I've not got a problem driving her in the cold...but know I won't be so keen on the rain. I'm not sure what effect the water getting in through the big hole I the bonnet (ok hood) might have either. Cleaning the body is a lot easier than cleaning the engine.

Appreciate the input folks. I have had some ongoing health issues which have altered how I do and view many things in life. I have also attended way too-many funerals of late. That does tend to alter one's perspective a bit. This car is a selfish luxury, period. I scrimped and saved and drove junk and near-junk cars for years in order to get it and then keep it. I then spent way more on restoring it than I paid for it originally, so any winter driving makes very little sense to me now.  Selling it would send a very good message to my wife and my family about where my priorities are. When I owned these types of cars in the 70s and 80s they were symbolic of who I was then. Thankfully, I managed to survive that period of my life.  I'm not ready to let it go just yet, but I'm clearly considering it.

lloyd3, sometimes certain things happen in life that make us feel differently or give us new outlook on what is truly important to him/her as compared to maybe just a year or even a month ago. Loss of a job, a health scare, finances, loss of a friend or loved one can all trigger thoughts of what is truly important to ones self. Perspective comes in weird forms sometimes, but it sounds like you care about your loved ones very much and that's more important than any car in my book. Kudos to you

Fred

Fortunately we have a great advantage over other countries in that we have no snow to speak of (in the suburbs) so we can drive our cars all year round. There is a drawback to driving it at least once a week  all year long however..........it's costs a fortune in fuel.   :icon_smile_big:
(I take it out once a week as long as it's not raining.........no fun cruising in the rain)

As for getting old........we're all heading down that same road with no chance of doing a U turn. I'm taking the scenic route to take in as much scenery as I possibly can and take the longest time possible to get there.

Have you considered moving to Florida? Or Australia for that matter?
It would eat at me knowing that I could only drive my Charger for roughly half the year, given the amount of sacrifice it takes to own one.
You'll know when the time is right to sell. Enjoy it while you can.

That looks like Preston.  He had a lot of Mopars influencing him years ago, lol.  Hi Joe.

- I drove my Charger up to the open house at Lucky 7 Rod Shop, in the drizzle.  The trunk leaks, had to dry it out the next day.  :icon_smile_angry:  I'll drive it in the winter - on dry days, with clean roads (no salt).

Half the year to drive it and half the year to work on it. Only thing you need is a garage.

Haha, that theory doesn't seem to play out well for me. In the winter I pack and stack most of my cars and bikes away in the garage. Sure I can tinker a bit, but major projects wait till spring when I have space to work again.....

There's more motorcycles to the left of the silver one, and in front of the Charger, but all I could fit in the pic.

I was contemplating parking mine a couple of weeks ago when it was foggy & in the low 30's (at night) here.
But it has warmed up to record temps in the 90's the last two days so  :shruggy:
