Can anyone tell me what the top line of numbers represents (above the screws) on a 1971 fender tag? I can't find any reference to these numbers on the websites that I've looked at. I was looking at a 71 Hemicharger on ebay and am at a loss as to what they mean. Any help out there?
I know that the "305" is the build date and the next group of numbers is the order number. Due the others refer to which "shift" it was built during? Also, typically how many cars were built during a shift?

Ghoste

The top line is usually moulding and stripe codes followed by END.  What is the entire sequence you're trying to work out.  (shift is not indicated btw)

It's ebay item #250572681894. and yes it is a Lynch Road tag.

I guess that would explain the 3 digit code above the screws?

This is the best explaination of a LR tag I've seen. While it uses a 70 tag as an example, the concepts are the same for a 71 tag. Just the placement of the codes are a little different.

Nice link.  :2thumbs:  There's a lot of other good stuff there too.

That link provides some nice information. Explains how they started as BIW. However it didn't cover the other set of numbers. Looking at the ebay auction car, information for the #'s 417 and 042 is still a mystery.

From the top of my head they are the numbers associated with engine assembly and transmission/rear end combination. They were only used on LR tags.

408 = engine assembly code= 71 B body; 426 Hemi with automatic transmission
052 = rear axle assembly code = 71 B body; Dana 4:10 gears, Sure Grip, 10" brakes = A34 axle package

You may want to review the link showing the GG fender tag decode.
