Hi does any one know what the fresh airpac code was for this car was it an opening in the hood ???

1972Rallye

N96 - otherwise know as the Ramcharger Hood.  You can see it if you click on the link in my sig below...

Jim Curnane

Thanks Bob I have a few more questions Not sure did my car come with a decal on the trunk lid above the tail lights? Also I have been looking for hp ratings on the internet and I am getting conflicting information One source says the 400 had a higher hp ratting then the 440 and less torque the other said the 440 had a higher rating. There are no 72 Rallye Chargers out there I think I have only seen 3 including yours I couldn't ask for a lower production number then1 of  83 but I wish there was a way to find out how many were rallyes I know you said (In the real World ) but I don't believe all 83 were rallyes.

1972Rallye

If your car came with the rear deck tape stripe, it would have V8X in the stripe field of your build sheet (row 2).  Yours looks blank.  Many people think that stripe was standard on the Rallye package, but it was not.

The horsepower rating for a (P) 400 4bbl is 255hp/340tq.  I think you were probably looking at mymopar.com.   The rating they show for 1972 440 is incorrect (it should show 280/290hp).

Regarding the production numbers... technically the 400-4 auto was available on Charger Rallye (coupes and hardtops), Charger Coupes, Charger Hardtops, and Charger SE models.  The 83 number is for all hardtops with the 400-4, auto, 3.55:1 S/G combo. There were only 42 SE models with that combo. I don't have coupe numbers, but they were, overall, considerably less.  You are probably right that not all were Rallyes, but given the performance nature of that combo, I assume most were.

Jim Curnane

Bob what is the diffrence between a Hardtop and a coupe ??? If I understand you correctly you are saying my car is a hardtop and out of that 83 42 were se edition so that would make my car 1 of 41 is that correct

1972Rallye

Hi Jim,
No... Coupes, Hardtops, and SEs were all different models and the production figures are broken down by model. So 125 total (83 Hardtops and 42 SEs).

Coupes were low cost models with fixed quarter windows and cheaper interior.  Hardtops had a roll-down quarter window, better interior options, etc.  SEs had a special shaped quarter window/vinyl top treatment, more up scale interior, etc.

Your car is a Hardtop. The VIN starts WH23...   A coupe VIN would start WL21...  and the SE starts WP29....

nice '72! congrats,.. great thread..

Jim Curnane

Thanks Bobits  amazing how all the major manufactures do it differently now what I would like to know is how I can find out how many coupes there were. Which book are you using I would like to get a copy for myself.

1972Rallye

No problem...

My source is actually data sheets I got from a fellow '71/'72 Charger guy.  They are the same documents that Galen Govier (well-known Mopar expert & Chrysler Registry guy)  uses for his "White Books".  Many people have issues with Galen because he is known to be SLOW, but here is his web-site:http://www.galengovier.com/

I will have the Coupe data sheets in a few days if you wanted to wait... I'll share what I have with you.

SirNik73

My sister just pulled the interior out of her Duster. we took her build sheet and put it in a gallon size Ziploc bag, and then put it in the Encyclopedia to make it flat again. We left the Ziploc open and then sealed in once the book pushed all the air out. We also scaned it so we don't have to fool with it agian.

Hi Bob thought you might find this interesting I found it surfing the net.

So the Charger carried into 1972 with few readily apparent changes on the outside, and some significant omissions and revisions inside. The line was pared down to just three models with the base hardtop, R/T, Super Bee and 500 all dropped. The lineup now consisted of the base Charger Coupe, an SE hardtop and a new Rallye hardtop.

I guess once we find out the number of SE Hardtops we will know the real number for my car looks like the rest were Rallyes. I would like to take it a step further and find out how many had the same color and options do you think Galen Govier could help. Thanks Jim ???

Chargerguy74

you can get the rallye package on a coupe too. BTW, I find Galens numbers for rallye cars to be out of whack.
WANTED: NOS or excellent condition 72-74 4 speed shifter boot for bench or centre armrest car, part number 3467755. It's a rubber boot that looks like it's sewn up leather.

WANTED: My original 440 blocks. Serial # 2A188182 and 3A100002

Jim Curnane

That does not make sense to me why would they have 3 models 1  specifically named Rallye Hardtop  why would they offer a  Rallye option when they allready have that specific model
( The lineup now consisted of the base Charger Coupe, an SE hardtop and a new Rallye hardtop )

Chargerguy74

There is the coupe the hardtop and the se (WL21, WH23, and WP29), the rallye package is available on the coupe or the hardtop. Not every hardtop is a rallye car, and not every rallye car has the rallye code on the tag. The rallye package is an add on option.

GOT YA Still waiting to find out how many coupes had the same drive train ( 400-4, auto, 3.55:1 S/G combo.).  In what way do you find Galens numbers to be out of whack ???

Jim Curnane

Hi Guys now I am getting confused I was told by someone that when this car came out with the 400 that they put 440 Magnum scripts on the hood because the 400 was a last minute decision. My car checks out as far as numbers matching the block and the broadcast sheet here is a link http://www.kbrestos.com/cmplt3/72chg.html to a 72 Rallye Charger I ran across and he has  400 scripts on the hood

1972Rallye

Hi Jim,
That's a new one for me... never heard anything like that before. I've seen a lot of 400 Magnum Rallyes with the callouts the hood.  I don't think Chrysler would have done that, but you can never say never with MaMopar.

Anyone else?

Bob

Jim Curnane

Anyone else have a 72 400 rallye ??? Where could I get the correct badge ???

1972Rallye

The 400 Magnum badges are fairly easy to find... there are some on e-bay right now.  Your local Chrysler dealer might even have some (or at least be able to order them for you).

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?
