I have a '69 Charger with a non magnum 440 that I changed to the orange box electronic ignition. For some reason, after about 2 months or so of weekend show driving and the occasional Sunday drive, the alternator gauge starts to head towards the negative side and the lights get dim. When that happens, I put a new regulator on it and everything is back to normal for another 2 months. It is an A/C car but I rarely use it. My question is, would an electronic regulator make a difference over the mechanical one? I do have a higher amp alternator that I was going to try but if it's something easier and cheaper I'd rather go that route. Plus the shop that did the mechanical work on my car did some sloppy work. They stripped the head off the mounting bolt and just wrenched on a nut to hold the alternator on. Any info is greatly appreciated...

Be sure is correctly grounded.

Are you using the upgraded electronic reg into the old mech look?

I have read they are getting some quality issues.

A Plus:
Check the stickied thread about the alt amm wiring and some suggested upgrades ( diagrams there are based on 3rd gens, but even on diff cavities, the idea is the same for any car ). Be sure about their conditions! Check bulkhead plugs for those wires.

We're in the middle of that right now, and have read most of Nacho's articles but will probably opt out of the ammeter. Surprised he didn't link to it cuz they made it a sticky:

Whatever route you take, it'll help for a foundation. We wanna stay around 40/90 or 50/100 amp alt., run headlight relays, add heavier wire where needed, and do sumthin about the J and P spade connectors in the bulkhead. Only restoring AC (original) and adding 200 watt amp/new HU. But we gotta get this stuff sorted first.

Year One has both the regular mechanical regulator and an electronic one that looks the same. I have never used an electrical one which is why I asked. I really don't know how to check electrical stuff and don't have the tools so I'll have to have someone take a look at it. Thanks...
