Driveshaft paint marks

When I pulled my driveshaft out a bath of Evap o rust there was a white square shaped paint daub, about 3" x 4" and looks like a few others were there too but came off in the evap o rust. Any idea what these daubs were for and if there were more? My car is a 69 RT 440 automatic 3.23 open.

The various colored paint daubs help the production line workers identify the correct propeller shaft for a certain type of car. They're found on all kinds of parts.
