I have the police report and spent 5hrs driving around that area looking for them, but all I had was a silver 4 door Camry looking car. No plates. Cops pretty much agree I'm fucked. I'm still headed to North Dakota to work for a month. Just sucks

Look at the bright side, you're not in the hospital with bills for that coming.

Thanks for being honest about your situation here..if this is true it is crazy!
It would help more if you explained the situational event..
I am so sorry for you, I cannot even begin to understand how it feels to be screwed like that.
I would suggest a bank wire situation in the future maybe..
this is actually a great subject for this forum..should be a stick thread on how to buy a charger safely!

Holy shit, man!
I can't imagine what a shitty year this has been for you. I also don't see you as a guy that flashes his cash in peoples faces. Someone must have known about the bankroll somehow. Did you post somewhere where you were going? What you were buying? It is possible that this is random but for that to be the case, the assholes must have really been lucky.

SHIT

edit: Hey thanks CB. Most wouldn't post it, but it gives some (weird?) shared relief to those of us who've been ripped off but stayed in quiet shame about it. But as for "lesson learned," not sure about that. Are we supposed to become less human or other than we are b/c there are more parasites in the world than there are organisms? Anyway, we've often talked about how unfortunate we are to be so far, else we'd have hit you up for work when we got the car. If you'd raise your rates, maybe nudge them more toward half of what shops charge, you'd recover this. Maybe more importantly, you'll know later in life that it was nuthin but a thing. Bein old I get to say that.

You say "Jumped" meaning you did not see it coming? Strong arm or armed? I say they where quittances of someone that knows you or your routine. I'm glade you walked away unharmed. 20 grand even in Franklins is a wad hard to hide. Did the Rest stop have cameras? You were not 'packin' I presume, that's a hard one to do over State lines sometimes. It feels strange sitting in a stall with a Colt in my hand locked and cocked, it really puts you on edge just waiting for the stall door to be kicked in.

Wow, that really sucks. That kind of money does not grow on trees and would take most of us quite some time to re-coup. Just this week I went to pick up a "new" car myself.  The seller asked for cash but I insisted on a cashiers check for this very reason.

This is also why I always have something holstered . . . depending on which state I am in.  It may not help in every situation, but can help even the odds a bit.

I had a gun, was in the truck. I was out of the truck. It was a random act. It's a long story where I thought someone was hurt at a rest stop. The one who loured me over must have seen me move the cash as I had just left a gas station and used $100 out of the stash. I got bear hugged while another took the cash. I had my truck and trailer they were in a sporty small car. Ran around for an hr trying to find them, gone. Cops took another hour to get there. I only posted this as a warning for others. I wasn't going to but thought ide share to make others aware

This sounds like a terrible situation, but the lesson in all this is painfully obvious:

Someone claims to be hurt, tell them you will summon an ambulance or other help.
Someone tries to hug, or otherwise touch me, I'd take a few steps away, and keep moving.

I see weird things all the time, or situations which make little sense. I don't roll down my windows or help people while traveling. Sorry.

Sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear this. Being frank about it is a good warning to the rest of us.

Sometimes you have to deal in cash because that's the only way some people will deal. The very few occasions that I travel with a wad, I have kept the spending money separate from the wad, and the wad out of site. $20k in hundreds is only a little more than 1/2" high stack (more for older bills) - it's not hard to conceal.

Yep, keep the $ separate, a stack of 20K folded in half would then be over a inch. He did not say if the scum took his wallet and cell phone, which they like to do around here with the loot. But you called the cops so I guess you had excess to a phone.
It would be interesting to see the location of the incident on a map. This costly situation will make you much more suspicious and cautious of your surroundings I'm sure.

Wife and I drove from Vegas to Cabo. Camped all over Baja, slept on Baja beaches, hung with the federales, hit all sorts of checkpoints and all the time had $1,000 US hidden all over the truck. Never a hitch. THIS kind of shit goes down on our soil. Let it be a warning to everyone. NEVER let your guard down. Hell, I won't even eat in a restaurant with my back to the door anymore!

darbgnik

This kind of thing happens everywhere, even in friendly apologetic Canada. Before we were together, my girlfriend was lured into getting robbed, under the guise of helping people. But it was knives, not guns, as it was still Canada.

I sold a Lamborghini Gallardo a few years ago, and the guy showed up with a gym bag full of stacks. Why, I have no idea. Maybe he thought it was cool to carry that much coin. Was a weird feeling carrying it all to the bank in a shoebox on the passenger seat, as he kept the gym bag. Hahaha. I wasn't thinking my chances of getting robbed all of a sudden would go up, but I did consider how many times I'd leave it unattended in the process.....

I'd be upset, but remember it's only money..... albeit a fair chunk of it. Money can be made again, lives cannot. In the end this story has a positive ending, you are here to talk about it.

I don't care to deal in cash, anyways, and would not trust someone who tried paying me the same  :Twocents:   Wire transfer, simple and easy.

And again, why "help" people? Call an ambulance/police, etc.   It's like the person who wants to "talk" at the gas station, as they wander about. GTFO!!

It sounds like the situation was hard to avoid in the big picture.  Even if you hadn't given anyone any chance to see the big cash wad, they might have rolled you anyway just looking for a few twenties in your wallet.  Sometimes shit happens.  Sorry man.

It probably doesn't feel very helpful to hear this, but you really are lucky not to have gotten hurt.  Plenty of people in your shoes have gotten killed for 1% of that amount.

Maybe it's because he was going from Las Vegas to buy a car in Texas and then haul it to North Dakota to store it at his buddies ranch and work there for a month on cars, and didn't want me or someone else to take a month off from work? I don't know... just a guess.

How did you wind up stopping at a rest area if you had just gotten gas?     Usually, after I get gas, I'm ready to go for a while.

Where does one keep 200 one hundred dollar bills secure on their person?      That is more than normal walking around money.

I hadn't honestly ever thought of that but it makes perfect sense. The odds of someone having cash probably do go up if they have either just unloaded a car trailer or are on the way to load one up. I bought a car in Long Island NY once. I didn't take cash. Turns out, my bank doesn't have branches in NY either so that was all sorts of fun. The cash would have been a whole lot easier to hide than the car though!

The whole situation sucks. Sorry it happened!

Sorry to hear this man. Glad your ok. But you did make some mistakes. I've been lucky but I keep a sharp eye out at all times. I carry ALL THE TIME. Concealed.  I interupted a buglar at one of my rentals before he could make an entry. The cops let him off since he had not gotten in. It was noon. He came back afterward with a baseball bat and chased me inside the house. He was a 25 year old marshall arts trained punk. I pulled my 1911 and decided he did not want to play with me anymore! Face it, to a young punk, we are easy victims. My Colt saved my life. You should have seen his eyes when he saw the hole in the end of my .45! He ran away very fast. My point is, I was watching out for him and he charged me when I went out the front door to get a tool from the truck. Never let your guard down.

I had my truck and trailer they were in a sporty small car. Ran around for an hr trying to find them, gone. Cops took another hour to get there. I only posted this as a warning for others. I wasn't going to but thought ide share to make others aware

Your early post in the thread said they were in a car like a Camry?   Your follow up calls it a sporty small car.  I find this odd.  Most car guys I know would not confuse the two.

When you got jumped, what happened to your dog in all this mess?

Also, never travel anywhere alone.

Isn't that a sad state of affair's. Too scared to travel alone in your own country. I can honestly say there is nowhere I know of I would not go alone in the UK....in the daytime at least. And no one is armed (firearms at least!!!) here of course. All a bit frightening looking in as an outsider. But if you guys like its as it is...its your country I guess.
Yes, we get it. The United Kingdom is fantastic.  :pity:
Just ask all those truck drivers that are being attacked by illegal immigrants and getting no protection from the government/law.

I never said the UK was fantastic at all..why do you guys insist on taking what I say and twisting it. We have a lot of problems..and I feel that Brexit (the worst political decision in my life imo) will only make things much worse both politically and financially. All I said was that it's sad that you don't want to go somewhere alone for fear of been robbed at gun point.....surely any normal person would agree with that! Cbrestorations could have be killed..just for a few dollars. The British lorry drivers being attacked are on the other side of the Channel in France...nothing to do with us.. and French police are armed (unlike here) and I'm sure are doing their best with limited resources.

And as for the idiot cdr....well what can I say. Calling members names like a spoilt kid every time you hear something you don't like about your country ..it's far from perfect too you know...like most counties I guess. I'd love to know if you would  be man enough to do it to my face.....? Easy to be the big man online. Patriotism is great...being deaf to anyone else's opinion of your country (like N Korea is now) causes big problems.

I'm outspoken, read a lot and have an opinion on most things. Obviously a small number of you cant handle that. (Sorry to those that pm me support). So although I've said it before and then found it impossible to resist.... I won't be posting on any post vaguely political. Happy cdr!?

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you !!

Who can protect you folks in the UK ??.  It ain't your so called "Police", with no guns.  You don't bring a belly club to a gun fight.  :brickwall:

Haa haa....that's the German/French ladies not the Brits....our ladies are well shaved!!....you guys do like to confuse us with the mainland European lot....we are a very different species. The rest I cant comment on ....due to being or political nature! Suffice to say that our cops don't have guns because they don't want them. They get a chance to vote on it every few years and always vote no....and the public don't want them to carry either (at least not routinely....we do have armed response officers for emergency use)) as only a relatively tiny number of illegal firearms exist in this country so there's not a lot to protect us from.......Ive never seen a real handgun in real life....just on the TV! I would consider what I've just said to just be a statement of facts rather than a comment of a political nature!!! LOL! :icon_smile_big:
