My son is restoring a 73 Charger Rallye. We need a good set of grilles, but are seeing different ones out there. I know 71-72 cars very well, but not sure on the subtle differences on the 3-4 cars.

There are plain grey grilles, grilles with the horizontal red stripe and some have a chrome strip around the perimeter. Which are which? I assume the red stripe are SE only?? I want to believe that the 3-4 grilles are different from each other, but not sure. I know someone will know this. I will check brochures, but that sometimes backfires too...

73-74:  grey for the Rallye package and base coupes. Chrome around is an SE w/o the red strip.  Back in 1975, I removed the red stripe from my '74 SE grille and blacked it out to look 'cooler'. Took a cloth to the paint before it was dry to remove it from the horizontal chromed areas and around the headlights.

(My 74 SE grille had a chrome perimeter and the horizontal parts were also chromed.)

For a Rallye Charger, you need the common, and cheaper, grey grilles.  When I owned my red 340 '73 Charger, I left it all original, except removed those UGLY black bumper guards, front and rear!
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

As mentioned!

Two grilles setups not year related.

SE got chromed edges all around including horizontal fins and headlights areas, all painted argent and the red orangish/chromed removable pot metal stripe.

Non SE ( Rallye included ) are argent and black finish inside the horizontal fins ( front edges still argent ).

I'm on my cell phone and pics to show are on my PC

( is hard to find a pic with noticeable shine on horizontal fins edges from the chrome )

Any other diff setup is a custom finish

The inside flat surface of the fins on a rallye are black aren't they, rather than all grey?

Nacho-RT74

Yes as I told and posted on pic. Not just the fins but the vertical wall of the inner side of tne grill which is a continuation of the lower part of the blacked out section on grill

It can't be called RALLYE grille since is the standard one. I would call it non SE grill

NOS Non SE pieces. Never been installed.... Like Nacho said.. Black on fins.

400sforever

Are the headlight surround pieces black also then?  The surround inserts on my rallye are black and another survivor car I've seen had black ones too

Eeehm, thanks... just learning.

Need to note repro grilles, headlight fillers and retainers are SOON TO ARRIVE as a repro at Classic industries... since one year ago LOL.

I'm really waiting for the headlight fillers. I wish better grilles than my car has at this moment, but can't afford them. My car being a hardtop, got SE grilles locally from assembly plant. ( market changes in Venezuela where it was assemblied )

Thanks guys for the responses! That is what we were thinking, SE grilles with red stripe/chrome and plain on Rallyes and plain Chargers.

I am still curious if there was any (subtle or not) differences between the 73 cars and the 74 cars? Nacho, maybe you have done a post about this before? The ones I have noticed:

- trunk pans are different
- steering wheels?
- 73 had T-handle for autos and 74 had round, wooded ball-type shifter, I believe
- bumperettes

I'm sure there are more...

Nacho-RT74

Trunk pan, yes

3 spokes steering wheel, yes full padded horn button, and newer steering wheel option with horn ring on Brougham optioned cars to 74. 73 got the same 71/72 ones

T or round ball handle. I have seen both being original equipment. My opinion is later 74s got round ball. My 74 and all locals got T handle, but that's maybe a diff story being assemblied outside USA.

Bumperettes, rears being larger on 74s. Both models, standard and DeLuxe. Never have noticed fronts being diff size, but mostly sure diff design pattern. Never have took care about that really
