Which Power Brake Booster to choose ??

I have a 68 Charger with power drum brakes.
I want to replace the booster and get rid of the front drums to run power disc up front.
There are a few different boosters out there. Anyone change from power drum to power disc, and what booster did you use ?
Any suggestions ??

Thanks  :2thumbs:

The first question you need to answer is How OEM are you trying to be with this conversion?

There are several vendors that offer non OEM kits to do this and while not as familiar to me I suspect there are a few OEM style kits out there too. You will need to change the 2 wheels (of course) but also the Booster/Master as well as the distribution block and add a proportioning valve when moving from drum to disc.

Not to concerned with OEM, just looking for a decent system. I removed everything from the old brake system during the restoration of the car.
I just finished restoring the dash and steering column. I was thinking before I install them, let get the drake booster and put that in first while theres lots of room to work inside the firewall.

Do you already have all the parts for the change over? (besides the booster)

An OEM type booster would be a Bendix unit like this one from inline tube:

I've not any direct experience with them though. I'll ask a board member I know to comment on his setup or I'll post up what he used but it's not an OEM setup so will probably be cheaper.

I installed this one and it works great!  I did have to open up the hole in the firewall about 1/4".  http://www.doctordiff.com/bendix-style-dual-diaphragm-booster.html

Get this guy on the phone, he can tell you the exact things you need.   Tell him Mitch sent you.

Or, if you want to do it on your own, there are several threads on here that describe others experience.

Here's one thread with more info than you probably want.

Yeah, he knows me, I just talked to him about 30 minutes ago.  We been back and forth about stuff for a while.  On second thought, he may want to forget about me, I bug him a lot. ;)

There is no reason to go aftermarket with this.  The best engineered system was developed by Chysler for these cars.  The original parts look correct, fit correctly, and best of all work beautifully.  While there have been improvements in the 45 years since built, it has primarily been in anti-lock systems, and larger rotors and pads for better fade resistance.  The booster on these disc brake cars is a powerful unit. It was a dual diaphram unit made by Bendix.  While a challenge to find, they are out there.  There are a couple on e-bay now.  I bought one outright from Booster Dewey a couple years ago.  You will need the linkage and reinforcement plate as well.  The master cylinders are being reproduced.

469,
I still have my original brake booster, but it was for power drum. I'm not sure there is a difference between the factory power drum and power disc which is what I want to convert to.
If there is no difference, then maybe I should send mine out for resto.   ????

Good afternoon,

I'm not trying to push this but, worth a look. This is what I ran into, and I'm not modifying my car.

Yes, the Boosters were different between drums and discs.  I have heard mixed reviews of the reproduction Bendix Boosters.  I had manual drums on my 1968.  I was able to piece together what I needed for a Power front disc system from a few donors and trips to Carlisle.  The braking is outstanding now.
