Saw this Superbird at Carlisle and took a couple of photos. When I got home, i see the code plate looks "different".  Instead of the usual B30 build date, it has C12. I thought all Superbirds had a B30 date??

all of the real Superbird fender tags I've seen have the "B30" SPD

Appears to be an error on a reproduction fender tag.

When a tag looks like new, it is.
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

That would be my call also.   It doesn't look like that tag has the bend up line (I realize some were hung from the mirror) and the inverse 22 is very straight

I saw this car at Carlisle, I did not look at that close, but it seemed like a nice car. Someone probably had some money in it and hopefully was enjoying it.

I can not speak to the authenticity of the tag or car one way or another.

Lets say for generic purposes someone has a 440+6 auto on the column Superbird, black bench seat, AM radio. Let's say it is a real car. I have one of my cars like this. So we know it has PS, PDB, Vinyl top, 26" radiator. Pretty standard car. Lets say it is on the NASCAR list. And a long known history, pictures way back.

Again, this is a pretty generic car. no special options, like AM/FM, Power windows, White interior, or Wood Steering Wheel.

A real large plurality of Superbirds were optioned this way. Maybe a bucket seat or even a console, but we can see from an original floor if it is a bucket seat or console car.

So we will have a large number of folks saying I wouldn't want this car, it is not a 4 speed. Say it does not have a fender tag. Another whole group of people would say I do not want it either. The market will speak on the value of this type of car. We can demonstrate it is a real Superbird, nothing special. In reality it is a pretty well optioned car compared to a basic Road Runner or 'Cuda.

There are a lot of these type of Superbirds out there and they are great cars.

Then, look at all the pictures from the 1970's of rusters, accidents, customized, cars with lost parts,  you name it. With the advent of the internet I am positively stunned with the number of cars with stories from the 1970's and early 1980's.

Yet in 2017 we have so many perfect cars.

Why don't people first acknowledge that a lot of Superbirds are well optioned real cars first? Just saying.

Some good points made here.    The car may in fact be perfectly fine.   As Redbird says,  If owner history, paperwork or photographs exist,  the loss of an original tag or build sheet is somewhat mitigated.

The best thing I can say for a reproduction tag is that it makes the owner feel better about their car.    But it is hard to put all the toothpaste back in the tube.  In a case like the subject car, the reproduction  tag becomes harmful once detected.

Id rather have no tag than a repro one.....and no tag is is exactly what I've got!! LOL! Might try and buy a real tag one day......not to match its details in anyway....just to make it look right under the hood.....and the benefit of annoying all the purists is another bonus! I had no trace any of VIN at all.....but our DVLA have allocated me one . Nothing like a real one but it gives me a number to register it with. I think they just randomly generate a 17 digit VIN style number.
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you !!

Another to compare.
