Hey experts, I need some help decoding these engine numbers. I was looking at this site http://moparcarparts.com/ENGINEiDENT (scroll to "B/RB Big Block and Hemi ID Boss" heading) to decode, but the example didn't seem to match what I was seeing. For example, there are three lines of numbers in the example, I only have two.

These are on the driver's side of the engine block.

Here's what I'm thinking so far:

First Line:      6T 40 EHP   —  6T=???  40=440 E=1969; HP=high performance (but what does that actually mean?)
Second Line:  6 18 2         — the second engine built on June 18

Am I anywhere near close? Thanks for your thoughts.

NOTE: I do know that I'll need to decode the numbers on the side of the engine as well. I didn't post those pictures because they need to be cleaned up more. Right now I can't discern the individual numbers.

6T 40 EHP

6= 1976
T= Trenton engine plant
40= 400 displacement
E= Cast crankshaft
HP= High Performance

6 18 2

Built on June 18, 1976 on the 2nd shift.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thanks John. Do you have a decoding sheet that I could look at?

The engine is in Dad's '69 Charger, and I thought I remembered him saying it was a 440.

It can't be a 400.  The pad is on the same plane as the valley pan end seal.  A 400 would be on a 45, same as a 383.   :shruggy:
Mopar forever!

Probably
3698330-440-x = 73-78RB
4006630-440-x = 75-79RB the one some like for the extra meat

Check the VIN stamping as well, IIRC it would have a U in the VIN for the HP440. Maybe someone can answer which 1976 had the HP, Grand Fury, Monaco, or police (not Ramcharger or motorhome)?

Good point, I didn't look at the pics.  :sorry:

Thanks! OK, we're on the right track here, I think. The numbers are really difficult to read on the side of the engine, but it looks as though the 4006630-440 could be right.

For the noobs like me, what's the "extra meat" in the 75-79RB?

There was always heresay from racers about liking late 440s from motorhomes. 440source http://www.440source.com/blockinfo.htm
actually tested to validate this, it just means somewhat that you're safe with 0.60 bore. I just mentioned that because I didn't know what you're asking for, if looking to sell it might be desirable to some out there.

While you're at it get the VIN, stamped on the block passenger side just above the oil pan and below the middle "freeze" plug. May be hard to see, especially with headers.
This may be useful to know in the future.

OK, got it.

When I get back to the garage (car is about one hour north), I'll try scraping it next time I'm up there. From the picture I took, I can only make out ...

... [?][4?]00[6?][?][?][?]

I should get to it by next week.
