Intake and Carb for 383

This may be a simple question to answer...

I have a 68 383 HP sitting around. I believe it to be stock. It has no intake, exhaust, water pump, or accessories. I have found an Edelbrock Performer (not RPM) intake with a Holley 750 (metering block on primary only, vacuum secondaries, electric choke) for sale locally for a decent price. From what I'm reading... the Performer is a "good" intake - but definitely not the "best" for a 383. It should have good street manners though. The 750 may be too big for this engine but it will likely run (the goal at this point) and I have a pile of 440s without carbs so it won't likely be wasted if I take it right back off.

It seems that 383 intakes are somewhat rare. Probably because people like 440s. Whenever I do find stock components they're in the same price range as this setup. Am I wrong to consider buying this?

is a bit better than the stock iron... something like the aluminium replacement... plus is spreadbore ( ready for TQ, and uses the later kind manifold choke mount ). Its actually based on the 400 stock intakes, a tad higher too.

400s got 850 cfm carbs from plant, so I wouldn't say a 750 cfm carbs is really big

A true 68 383hp motor could be stout. If has replacement pistons in it, then we know what is probably in it. The dp4b/performer is a decent starter intake. Its hard to beat an rpm but on a stock mill, you wont notice any difference. If the price is right, nab it. I paid 75 bucks for mine. The 750 with a vac secondary can be tuned to run perfect on it. Overkill stock, yes, but it wont hurt.

From the prices of stock intakes people must think they are gold. This setup is about 1/3rd of retail pricing. I don't remember hearing that this engine had been apart but I was told it ran really strong. I suppose I could peek inside.

I read a Hot Rod test and it wasn't worse than stock. Decent torque compared to a lot of them. My main goal right now is to get an intake on the engine and run it on my test stand so, technically, any intake would do. I like getting a deal if possible though.

I have the same set up and just keep in mind you may need a drop base air cleaner to avoid rubbing on the hood pad.

there is something weird there... The performer is not THAT higher than the stock intake. Maybe just half of an inch!

even less on a B block... can't talk about an RB.

Yeah, I have a Performer RPM for a 440 that will fit under the hood with a drop base but it's one of the tallest intakes out there. It's hard to believe a regular Performer on a low block 383 would come that close.

I'm running it in my stroker 400 and using stock air purificator. I have bulged hood, but I'm  sure will fit quite perfect without issues down a flat hood

I would post a picture of the performer rpm on my 383 withOUT a drop base air cleaner, but photobucket are greedy pricks so i cant do that anymore.

I had several tall intakes on my 383 and the regular 383 magnum air cleaner. Had no problems with hood clearance until I swapped in the 440 and the RPM intake and then I had to go to the drop base breather I actually trimmed the insulation under the hood so it had a little more room. Not sure what may be going on there but usually there's plenty of room on a B engine.

So I picked it up. The second pic is of it sitting next to an Edelbrock Performer RPM for a 440. Probably 1.5" shorter. No pic of it sitting on an engine because I managed to bury the 383 behind some 440s. Not a terrible problem to have...
