Went to look at a 68 Charger possibly R/T project car today

So i went to look at a striped out shell of a 68 Charger today
Took no pictures before anyone asks

The guy bought a fancy newer Mustang and wants to sell the Dodge

Car is very stripped out from a body shop that was going to start on it
1/4s cut off but the number in the trunk lip is still there
8 1/4 rear end just to hold it up

It has an XS29 VIN number on the dash that is just laying in the car
No proof that that dash is from that car and with out a build sheet never will

Guy selling the car says from his research it must be a real R/T because it still had the original double fuel lines ( looked the same crusty as rest of car)

Question  Did 68 come with the double lines ?
              Just big block cars ?

The lines looked like they were both the same size and after working on my car I do not think one was a 3/8 either
XS29L8 , 7339 , 7336

ALL cars had one fuel line and one vent line. The vent line is 1/4" but the fuel line could be 5/16" for slantys, 318s, 383s but the 440 and Hemi had a 3/8" line.

6bblgt

440 & HEMI had an additional 1/4" fuel return line from front to back

the vent line is just from the tank thru the trunk into a rear frame rail

I can confirm a body number as possibly correct (or IMPOSSIBLE) for a specific '68 Charger VIN

NO fender tag?

Mytur Binsdirti

Look for the wider radiator opening, torque boxes, rear frame rail gussets and the pinion snubber reinforcement. That'll tell if it's a Hemi car or not.

So the double line means at least a 440 or 426 ?
The 69 I am working on right now is a 383 car and it only has one 3/8 gas line
The 68 car did not have the torque boxes so not a hemi

So do you have a list of VIN and body numbers that you have collected and can tell if the if the numbers are close enough together to be right ?

Another thing I was wondering about is the torsion bars as they are still in the car
How many sizes were there for 68 ?
Just small block and bigger big block size ?
What diameter should a 440 R/T car have ?

1968 b-body torsion bars:
#775/774 - .86" dia. = /6
#777/776 - .88" dia. = 318 & 383
#779/778 - .90" dia. = OPTIONAL
#781/780 - .92" dia. = 426 & 440

My 70 Charger was a 318 car. The original lines were a 1/4" vent line right next to the 5/16" fuel line.

IIRC Dodge Chargers in particular got the 0.90" bars standard on 318 and 383s.  Not sure about the Chargers with slant-6 motors.

Thank you. That makes sense since it seems that there were several changes for 1970, especially fuel and emission related.

Mopar Nut

Didn't California cars only have the fuel vent lines?

did you happen to notice if it had the Factory installed   drivers side , exhaust hanger mounting bracket , for the factory  duel exhaust cars , ie  383 hp  440 & hemi cars .. not that it means much could of easily been added ... but  could be another part of the puzzle to consider etc :popcrn:

Here's a good picture of the Hemi add ons:

Torque boxes, snubber reinforcement & rear frame rail gussets.....

IDAREYOU!

70 sublime. I just went out and measured the torsion bars for you. Using a Mitutoyo vernier I'm coming up with .930 as the most common measurement. Hope this helps.

Thanks. Where are the frame rail gussets? I have a 70 Charger 500 and I can't recall my rear frame rails looking any different.

I believe the gussets are at the very back on the short section of frame rail that holds the rear of the leaf spring
Looks like little triangles are added to it in this location

Yeah, I guess I need more detailed pictures of my car to show.

Kern Dog

...OR is it the flat metal between the frame rail and leaf spring shackle ???

Kern Dog

Thanks again. I added the torque boxes to mine along with 3x3 home made frame connectors. I've wondered if my torque boxes hung lower than stock.

Back in the day of getting a 68 Charger new could you get a 440 in an XP car or as soon as you wanted a 440 it turned into an XS car ?
You wanted a little extra to pull the camper trailer but did not want a factory hot rod
