help from an electronic tech... about fix my multitester

this last weekend was using my multitester on continuity function, but then had to check for voltage, BUT made a mistake, forgot I had selected the continuity function selected and PLUF!!!, Blown my multitester.

after disassembly on place noticed it blown the fuse. I didn't have a spare at the moment so jumped the terminals and kept working BUT didn't have the buzzer function for continuity test...

got home and removed the PCB to check... smell it and found the buzzer also blown. I searched for replacement locally. Nobody have the right buzzer in stock. Searched on ebay and found they are available BUT I have found several diff pieces listed with diff specs but they all look pretty much the same from outside.

I have found they are listed on ebay for 3v, 5v, 9v, 12v or several voltages rate on same pieces. Also have found several listed as passive or active, AC or DC buzzer. Also 16 Ohms or 48 Ohms. Even I know a bit of electronics this kind of diff listings got me in several doubts. AS FAR I KNOW this kind of buzzer can't be "active", and dunno if they work on several voltage rates or they are really rated for just one or another voltage rate. Dunno about the AC or DC reality of these. If you ask me, per the bit of electronic knowledgement I have they should be all passive and DC

I guess I'm needing a 3 volts unit ( if the voltage rate is for real ) since my multitester uses 2 AA batteries, but dunno if they are really made for certain voltage rate or a wider rate than some sellers advertise. And dunno the reality of the rest.... active/passive, AC/DC

can somebody help on which one I could be needing. They are some of diff sizes by small differences ( couple of milimeters more or less ). I'm also trying to get the closer to the one I have which is around 12 mm diameter and 7 mm height... 7 mm between leads.

Need to get these replacement from Asia, because get from USA allmost multiplies x 10 the price I'd have to pay. And I bet the pieces from USA are the same than the Asian ones.

pics attached of my tester and buzzer..

Just because you have a car from the 70s its not mandatory to use a circuit tester from the same era! LOL. For a few quid (probably not a lot more than a new fuse and buzzer) you could get a nice digital one with more functions and way more accuracy! :2thumbs:
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you !!

I needed an analog one, so thats why I got this. Sometimes Need to check for pulsating signals ( I.E. the cluster voltage limiter ) where the sample rates of digital testers won't help. The needle will sense this pulsating voltages, true not fast enough to reach the actual voltage, but I can figure it out.

Also works like a VU meter, for audio signals.

I have couple digital ones though ( one with amperes clamp ), but want to keep this. Bough it couple of years ago in fact.

Aside that, lot of ppl at job is lazy enough to not get or carry their own multitesters and allways request mine. When they find is an analog one just pass, because don't know how to use it LOL... so that's a protection my tester being save from some other hands, being lost or stolen. Is cheap unit but quite enough for me. A cheap unit becomes on an expensive one when you don't have it and need it!

Hi Nacho,

i think I would go with a 3 volt DC unit as that is the tester's battery supply. Active or passive refers to if the buzzer is just like a simple speaker (passive) or has some internal electronics (active). So, I really don't know which type might have been used in your meter. Maybe get one of each and see what works.

Will remove the epoxy from the back of my buzzer and post the pic to wait for your opinion

BTW, is hard to find any kind of tester ( digital or analog ) with ALL the functions this unit have, even less on the $30 price rate LOL

The only advantage of several of digital tester availables have is the automatic reading rate so, no need to select a reading rate... or just afew.

About cost... mmmmm buzzer $1 including shipping from Asia, fuse some cents locally... so let's round it up to $2 to fix it... naaah, I don't think will find a nice multitester on $5-10 ratio LOL

Well, removed partially the epoxy on my buzzer ans found it have/has some components

Then searching on web found this pic

Mine looked like that, showing something was down the epoxy. Others are totally flat epoxy.

So I guess mine is "active"

Gotcha.....I can use a digital multimeter because when I need to use of for pulsating signals (for o2 sensors etc) I use an oscilloscope. Picked it up real cheap at a garage sale. Would not be without one now!

Nacho-RT74

Well! I think got a nice deal! $4.39 for 10 pieces ( 12x6.5 mm ) free shipping to Venezuela! That makes $0.44 per piece.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/321780733912

Use one and sell the rest on www.mercadolibre.com.ve ( local version of ebay )

I'd like to learn how to use an oscilloscope. I'm not elect tech, just have learnt a bit on my bussines as sound tech.

Don't have the money anyway to get one at this moment

Revox B790 turntable ( is in working order but some components got overheated, and wishing a dust cover replacement... US$290  :o out of my budget )
Crown OC150A monitor system ( just needing mantenience by now )
Hp Nx6320 laptop ( needing new screen, thats an ASAP fix, allmost ready to buy )

Good job on saving your analog multi meter.  Just finished repairs on a Simpson 260 I've had for over 30 years.

Revox and Crown...good stuff.  If you have trouble finding belts check out Marrs Communications Inc. I use them for belts for my reel, cassette and 8-track decks. http://www.marrscommunications.com/  If you're unsure if they have what you want email them at their inquiry email listed on their site.  Have yet to not get the belts I needed.

Well, Simpson multitester is waaaay another deal! That's a top of line product! Mine is a cheap unit ( $20-30 on ebay ) but sure didn't need to spend that where just $1-2 can get it fixed!

Also have Amcron ( Crown international branding ) D150A amp and IC150A pre, Tascam CC222SL Cd/Cassette combo, and Tascam TU690 tuner allong with couple of Tannoys 607II speakers.

About the Revox parts, I have saved some items at Ebay from sellers who sell rebuild kits. Sure I can't right now, food is priority with all the problems we are getting locally, but will check on that seller

Throw that ting away and buy a Simpson 260!

I still have one too. :)

For home or job at an office is good, but too expensive and heavy to carry on with it on my "job"
