Clutch Linkage Adjustment

I recently installed a new clutch and found that I still had to run the adjustment nut quite a ways out in order to assure the pedal came all the way up when released, which seemed odd.  Is this normal?  I'm a little worried that it could actually pop out of there especially if I have to adjust further as clutch wears.  Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

You might have the wrong adjuster rod. I believe there is a longer length part available.

Shouldn't be a problem as long as the fork return spring remains in place. As the disc wears, the rod will extend further into the insulator.

It does look like it's out toward the end a little too far. I will look at mine and see where the rod is at on it. Have you replaced the little white Z-bar half moon bushing's? If they are worn out or missing that would cause the linkage to have alot of slop in it and to take out the slop you have to adjust it out with the adjusting rod.

Thanks.  I did replace them when I had the trans out recently.  Everything there seems tight.

I will look tomorrow at mine but as said above as the clutch wears you will actually turn the nut clockwise and make the adjusting rod come through the fork further.

I looked at mine today and the adjusting rod on mine comes through the fork insulator about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch out. My clutch has been in my car for a few years now so that may make a difference too. With a brand new clutch that may be normal......

Thanks for checking.  I greatly appreciate it.

Keep in mind that the thickness of the clutch disc determines the throw-out fork position when the disc is new. It doesn't take much extra thickness on the disc to run the fork out to the end of the adjuster as shown.

So is it correct then that a newer (thicker) clutch means less thread exposure on the end, as others have stated?  And as clutch wears the adjustment would be in the direction that exposes more thread?

John_Kunkel

Yes. Think about it, when you depress the clutch pedal the pressure plate moves away from the disc (same as a thicker disc would position it) and the fork moves aft. Less disc thickness would place the fork further forward and expose more of the pushrod thread.
