I have a potential family situation brewing related to me inheriting my step-dads Charger and the equity of said event relative to what other family members received in the will.

Any help is much appreciated

As in any inheritance that is doled out among 2 or more family members, there's always one or more who feels "cheated", you were given the car and whatever else you received, it's yours, you don't have to justify to anyone the value of your inherited GIFT, because that's what it is, A GIFT that was intended for you, had the entire estate been awarded to a collective group of friends and or family members to be shared/divided amongst yourselves, then you and the other's would be obligated to have the value determined so that a proper division was made to each and everyone, that's not the case here as you relate it ....

I'll assume there was a will, and this matter has already been thru Probate, and you were awarded the vehicle?

Yep, there is a will and a Trust with the complication of a handwritten amendment to the will a couple weeks before passing.  The attorney received the handwritten letter but my step-dad passed before it was notarized.  No one contests that the car is mine but one party is hurt that what they received had conditions on it...that they help prepare the house for sale in order to receive the item.  Escrow closes this week and then it is time to split the remaining proceeds.

Hurt feelings and a desperate financial situation on the part of one party coupled with the un-notarized handwritten wild-card letter and an attorney that seems extremely disorganized and somewhat irrational are causing everyone's stress levels to skyrocket.  I'm hoping that the attorney is actually a seasoned professional who's role model was Lt. Columbo and she will pull it all together at the last minute and the matter will be settled as close as possible to what my stepfather intended.

Thanks everyone who helped out here...it is much appreciated.

Well, it may be a nice thing to do to say the car is worth $30K and do the fairness thing to save relationships.

Always amazes me how some people think they deserve things that weren't theirs in the first place....but that's people, I guess.

Good luck!

If he had died 20 years ago when the car was worth $3k would they be chasing you down now that the value has risen? Absolutely not. If you guys were best fishing buddies and he left you his prized lure collection would it mean more to you than anyone else even if the total value was $200? Yes. Sentimental value is often much higher than real-world value but people who don't have that connection can only see the dollar signs. The things I would want from my parents are mostly worthless to anyone else. If your relatives are so keen on the value of an old car, take it to a restoration shop and get a quote for what it would cost to completely restore it then tell your relatives to kick in their share! It's only fair! :P

I'd try to estimate the worth but, honestly, I'd tell them to buzz off. I can predict that even if it's $500 more than whatever they got they'll still have a problem. Anything lower than what they got and they'll assume there is some trickery involved.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

That hit home with me...I have my dads old tackle box, it's cool to look through.
My little bro has his old 1944 Ford Army jeep.

Hmmm... I wonder what that jeep is worth now?  ;)
