Which 1 7/8 Ceramic Headers for my 70 RT?

Looking for some headers for my 440. It's got TF 240 heads on it also. So do TTI,s fit that much better and worth the money? Any other headers fit these cars?

Is it a stock stroke 440 ? If so, the 1 7/8 primary tube header is going to be your best choice unless it is an all out race build with lots of cam, compression and deep gears.

TTI's fit great with angled plug cylinder heads. There really is no other choice for a 1 7/8 header.  ;)

I recently put on the Summit Racing ceramic 1 7/8 on my 68 with a 440.  I'm happy with them for the price paid (just under $400).  They are close to the torsion bars but I didn't notice it until they were in and bolted up.

303 Mopar

TTI's are the best fitting header.  They are pricey but I always say do it once and do it right.

I wouldn't use the summit 1 7/8 header with angle plugs. They are hookers but with 18 gauge tubes instead of 16 gauge. Most manufactures offer either a 1 3/4 or a 2" header for the BB Mopar. It would be good to see an 1 7/8 header with a 3/8 flange 16 gauge tube suitable for angle plugs that didn't cost an arm and a leg.

Yeah it's a stock stroke. I was hoping to get a break and find something that looks good and cheaper but I don't guess cheap is involved with engine builds lol

Definitely go with the 1 7/8 primaries. When we had my old 446 on the dyno (535hp/540tq) we tried both the 1 7/8 & 2in headers. Horsepower was the same for both but the 17/8 tube was 20 ftlbs better across the board. A 2in is a good fit for a stroker or race type 440 build.

Ok, thanks for the advice everybody. My build is a 68 440 bored 40, cranked turned, stock rods with ARP bolts, racetech lightweight forged pistons, square decked, Trick Flow Roller lifters, haven't picked a roller cam yet, MP dual plane intake, TF 240 Heads, 1.6 Mancini Roller Rockers. Still Havnt decided on a Carb. What would you guys use? Don't want to over Carb it. Just a street car. Thanks!

firefighter3931

An 850DP will be fine....I like the Proform carbs, personally.  :2thumbs:

As for the cam ; stick with a mild "street roller" grind. It will be easier on valvetrain parts and require less frequent maintenance.  ;)

The "right" cam depends on several factors ; compression, stall speed, rear end gearing etc...

Ron
391 gears, T-56 Magnum Six Speed, compression around 10.5 and thanks for the Carb recommendation. What do you think about Quickfuel Carbs?

c00nhunterjoe

Around 10.5:1? That phrase would scare me to death. What is the part number of the pistons used? The exact, measured numbers are really needed to pick a cam.

pipeliner

I'm sorry it's a 10.7:1 . It's a flat top with valve reliefs. I asked him what it weighs for the fun of it and he said 670. I called comp and they recommend a xr286hr which I thought was to big. I was thinking more like the 280 but it doesn't have to be a comp cam

c00nhunterjoe

If you are going with a roller and already have adjustable valvetrain, its a nobrainer to go solid over the hydraulic cam. The 3.91s and handshaker leave you room to play with bigger cams. What kind of manners do you want from it?

If you go with a comp- i would run the 286r. I like lunatis mech rollers better. Buts its a crapshoot, everyone has their preferences.

pipeliner

Its a street car only and will be daily driven when I'm laid off. I'm going to be doing long trips with the AC on and a lot of street cruising. I want something with good characteristics and won't shake me out of the car. I know the handshaker leaves me a lot of options and engine builders smile when you tell them this because their trying to squeeze you out all the hp they can. I really want something maintenance free even though it is an adjustable drivetrain if there is such a thing.Im going to be putting a lot of miles on this puppy.

c00nhunterjoe

Might want to go with something in the low 230 at .050 on a 110- 112 lsa then.

mopar0166

I'm extremely happy with my dougs headers, fit great, easy to change plugs and better price then tti.  With larger headers their really isn't many options that fit really good and also let you change plugs with out making your own tools.

I listened to a 440 with a XR 280 HR and it was 230/236 @ 50 on a 110 last night on you tube and it sound great. I don't think I need to go any lower than that though.

Are you also running Heads with Angle plugs?

With the 3.91s its doubtful you will be doing any low rpm cruising. The stick car will enhance cam surge at lower rpm. That cam will "skip" til at least 1500, probably 2000. Not a bad thing, just bear it in mind. As far as headers go, im running indy 440-1 heads with tti2 to 2 1/8 step tubes. They are monstrous. It takes me about 15 minutes to change ALL 8 plugs.

Ok. What do you mean skip?

I run a FT hyd with 231/237 .525 lift in a similar combo and 1500 is where it flattens out.
You may want to get some opinions on detonation with that CR you have.

Im no pro on engines but that's the CR with Zero deck height. That 280 cam has a 541 lift and with 1.6 ROckers not sure what it would be.

justcruisin

I would think the 280 cam would put you somewhere around 8.4:1 dynamic, I am no expert by any stretch but I would think that - depending on your elevation - you could be on the edge for pump gas. Just something you might want to look into first.

OK, yeah that was my goal to run pump gas.

c00nhunterjoe

10.7:1 static on a stock cam on aluminum heads will run on 87 octane. Thats not an issue on your build. Skippinf off the cam is  a slang term for essentially the rough idle characteristics at off idle engine speeds. My 292 duration cam didnt "clean up" and smooth out until 2500 rpm.

A bit radical, but this is skipping off ghe cam. The max wedge doesnt clean up til almost 4000 rpm.

So do you think the cam I want to use is to small? What would you recommend? LikenIbsaid I was told I should run a size bigger a XR 286 HR who is a 236/242 @50 with 110 and 544 lift

c00nhunterjoe

If you run that hydraulic, then you might want to step down to the 280 you suggested. If you run the mechanical, stick with the 286. With mechanicals you have to take into account the lash when looking at the specs.

Yeah I've already ordered the hydraulic rollers from Trick Flow. I just want a good street/highway car with good characteristics and I can run on pump gas.  Thanks for the info. You guys already lost with me with lash count and all that fancy engine talk lol

c00nhunterjoe

I will have to look that 286hr grind up that comp reccomended you, if it is ground on a 110 lsa then it will probably suit your needs. It will definatly make more power then the smaller one. The 3.91s will keep your cruise rpm up above the cams lope rpms even on a 28" tire.

So with the 3.91 gears it wouldn't be to radical to drive on the streets?

The 286HR will be fine with that combo. I've heard that cam in a similarly built 440 and it sounded and performed quite well. Nice lope at idle with descent manners and very good throttle response.  :2thumbs:
