I've got an old 6619 holley carb that i'm trying to get up and working on my basically stock 69' 383.  I rebuilt it and have everything working okay, but I really want to learn more about optimizing it.  It's a 600 cfm carb, right now i've got 66's for the main and secondary jets, along with a purple spring for the vacuum secondaries, along with a 7.5 power valve.  - it's starts right up and runs great at idle, but when I take it out on the road and try to open it up a little it sputters and doesn't really pick up speed like it should.  The throttle response is good, just doesn't do what it feels like it should do at wide open throttle....any see anything glaring that could be my problem?  (i bought this carb off of ebay, and just replaced gaskets - the only thing i have changed it the secondary spring - going black to purple -- as i don't think the secondaries are opening)...thanks for the help!!

mis-typed...has 66 for the primaries

Is the ignition all checked out.  I assume electronic.

Stumbling when the gas is put down could be accelerator pump.
What accelerator pump cam (color - I think orange was one that was used in mine) and how is that adjusted.  Is the nozzle the stock size? Is it adjusted so that it squirts gas as soon as the throttle is touched.

Once it settles in to accelerating is it OK.  (Sorry I do not have my FSM so cannot check what the jets were my year, but those sizes do not seem out of line.)  (I do not recall if springs were listed).  Black to purple should require more gas since the secondaries should open several steps quicker.  (It doesn't backfire through the carb- right? - that would be too little gas and secondaries opening too fast)

There is a trick with a paperclip on the vacuum pot to check to see if the secondaries are opening.  That can also be tried.

I suggest verifying that the ignition is properly set up, then that the jets are correct for the top end (check the secondaries are opening), then look at the accelerator pump circuit.

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

...thanks much...got it figured out in a round-about way...after spending the better half of my weekend replacing parts and triple checking the rebuild, i FINALLY figured out what was going on...the fuel inlet on the carb was almost completely plugged.  It was just enough that i could idle fine, and with a short stab of the throttle it was fine, but when i'd take it out it would hesitate and stumble horribly...I check the pump pressure, and when i would adjust the floats i'd get just a little gas dripping out...it was a nightmare to diagnose..but now that I cleaned out the restriction, things are running good!

The squirter is a 31, jets are 66, and the power valve is a 7.5, running a purple spring, white cam...now that I know that i actually rebuilt it correctly, i'm going to start with the tinkering.

Its always a plus when its something simple.  :2thumbs:

Glad to hear you figured it out, and completely different from what I thunk
