Metering Rod has "slight" bend...is that a big deal?

Hey Folks, pulling apart my AVS and trying to find my problem with poor acceleration and overly rich mixture. The one rod has a slight bend towards the narrow tip. Granted it's slight but I'm wondering if could cause problems similar to what I am experiencing.

Second, how can you tell if the rods match the jets? I have several carbs that I have torn down and along the way I took some rods and jets from one carb (the multiple steps rod) and moved them to the carb that I ended up using. As a result I dont know if I put all rods back into the correct jets. Is there any marking system on these things that I'm not seeing? I see it listed in my Carter book but I cant see any markings on the rods? Is there any way to match the rods and jets up visually?

Thanks for any comments or direction...

A slight bend could cause problems Mike.  Granted, without seeing it, I can't tell how slight it really is but it wouldn't take much.  About the best way to check the rods and jets would be with a micrometer and drill bits.

I would get an Edelbrock tuning kit and start over. That sounds like much of your problem. Between the bent rod and not knowing what size, it sounds like you have to start all over.
If it ain't wide open; it ain't running.        Rule number one in motocross racing: Pin it; row the gear box; and wait until you hit something.     At work my motto is: If you need me, call someone else.

ther eare extremely tiny & difficult to read #s on the jets & metering rods

Deputy I dont recall seeing a kit available? Any idea where I could purchase that?

Thanks

Any speed shop that sells Edelbrock carbs should have them.

Thanks Ghost, any idea what "size" I should get???? This is a 600 CFM AVS from a 68 383 AT motor.

Thanks for the help guys. Sounds like I should go back to the basics on this carb.

What happened to the new eddy carb you were getting?

I think he wants to keep it stock looking  :eyes:  I myself would go with a eddy carb, to me its more improtant how the motor runs than how it looks.

OK OK guys take it easy!  :icon_smile_cool:

I am not afraid of spending the cash but there was more to the story after I talked with tech support at Mancini Racing. Turns out that the Eddy was about $350 for an AVS. Also, I'd needed to do an electric choke and can't use the stock choke that I spent $50 for. The $200 carb that I thought I would use was an AFB with the same issues so I said no for now. I also needed a carb linkage for the thing.

So yesterday I put in the new plugs, points and rotor. I pulled my carb off and found some interesting issues as well. There is so little to these AVS carbs that I figured I'd take one more look at it. Turns out there was an an large washer jammed in my accerlator pump hole that I believe was preventing it from functioning correctly. It did not belong on the shaft and honestly I dont know how it got there. I had my buddy help me with this rebuild and honestly I should have done it myself and taken my time over a few hours.

Today at lunch I hit my local speed shop and purchaed new metering rods, jets and springs. I checked the rod specs on the new Edelbrock 600 CFM and the rod and jets were .070 x .047. This shop just happen to have a few sets of VERY old rods and jets and springs (all unopened). The spring were the right tension too (orange 5").

If I can I will try tonight (late) to install this kit and put the carb back together. I'll take my time with all the adjustments too. If this does not fix it I quesss I'll pull the trigger for a new AVS but will do so only after I put some time into this carb. I'll post with my results.

Well I hear you, and what about the fuel line? If you want a nice one thats another $40.00 unless you just throw a hose on it. Sounds like you have everything you need, maybe if it still is not perfect you should just let a good carb shop look at it. Might still be cheaper then a new carb and you could keep everything. You could even mail it somewhere if you can't find anybody you trust. Oh and you said you got a new rotor but what about the cap? Good luck and don't rush it!!

Mfr426

The cap is new too. I just finished the carb rebuild. I'm going to wait till tomorrow night to fire it up. If that does not cut it I told the wife that was going to have to buck up and either send it out for a bebuild or spend the $350 for a new AVS...ouch...

Fingers are crossed.

A good shop has a flow bench or something that they can put the carb on and check it out. There used to be a shop in CA called "the carburetor shop" but I think they went out of business, thanks to F. I.  I like them they were honest and told me some tips right over the phone. Maybe some here knows a fair and honest place. If there is nothing Wrong or its this one little thing you should not have to pay for a total rebuilt. Once again the best of luck to you.
