How do you do it?  The FSM shows a slide hammer but the picture isn't very clear.  What kind of attachment is on the end of that slide hammer?

Thanks

Curt

I simply use a long screwdriver and pry it up... who cares how it comes out if will be replaced anyway

I mean the one in the axle tube.  You just collapse it with a screwdriver?

How I did mine.. as I didn't have an adjustable puller to get behind it. Large bolt and washers.. on a 3 foot wire. Pull into place and then knock out from the other side with a pipe. If you're pumkin is still in of course this won't work.

Either way, make sure you measure how deep the seal counterbore is from the flange, so you can subtract the seal width and then know you have it full seated when you put the new one in.

With the axles & center section out, from the opposite side use something long like a squared off broom handle or length of pipe.

Tap-tap-tap - out.

Thanks for the ideas guys.  I always try to do it the way book says, if possible.  If not, then it's time for some ingenuity.

I use a sliding hammer with a type of hook attachment on the end.

I get it and tend to like playing with and making tools myself.   If some care and thought went into making a nice puller the old seal may come out in good enough condition to put it back in.
However--they are so cheap I see no point in doing that. I usually use vice grips and a pry bar and have never been held up or stumped.

I messed with one of those for 1/2 a day once before a mechanic buddy of mine just told me to knock it out from the other end with an old broomstick. Sometimes humans make things overly complicated... ;)

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

But that's if center section is out... if not, then the angled nose priers are great... I have made both with success... screwdriver and pliers. That's simply a piece makes no sense remove with special tools to get it out straight, because is a fact if you need remove it is BECAUSE NEEDS to be replaced... don't you ?

DESTROY IT, COLLAPSE IT... LOL

Yeah, in my case it was one of those "while I am in here" projects. I was replacing the center section so I already had everything apart. I turned a 2 hour job into a whole day job just trying to replace those stupid seals.

My main concern in wanting to do it "right" was to not damage the seal seat.  As it turned out the carrier had already been removed so I just knocked them out from the other side as several had suggested.

Thanks
