1,650 bucks from Randy's. ? WOW how prices jumped up.
Anyone have ideas where to find a cheaper, new and complete ?

RCCDrew

Have you tried Dr Diff?  :ahum:

Alaskan_TA

ACUDANUT

No, but 1,375/1,400 dollars still ain't cheap. Thanks though! :2thumbs:

Alaskan_TA

I pieced one together last year.

Used 742 case with good 3.55 gears (open).

Used clutch style sure-grip.

After the rebuild parts & bearings were purchased & I payed a local shop to assemble it, I was very close to what Cass charges for a fully assembled 489 with new parts.

Next time, I'll just go to Cass.

By the time I priced gears, bearings, and factored in labor, I just bought a new 3.55 from Dr. Diff.

Nacho-RT74

I THINK!!!!

get an used open diff with 3:55 and buy the carrier separatelly. Shouldn't be more than US$800 all together.

or get an used housing with any gear in it and get just gear set and carrier new. Shouldn't be more than US$900-1000

nevermind... it seems his prices also reachs around US$1500 once everything is built... but try a call, who knows.

I still think can be built in US$1000 rate: used housing ( 150 or so ) New bearing set with seal bolts and gasket ( 100 or so ) new gear set ( 200 or so ) new carrier ( 400 or so ) yoke and straps ( 100 or so )... shippings ( 40-70 )

dunno about a local builder

prices from what I have checked on ebay

another option:

http://caldwell-id.americanlisted.com/car-parts/mopar-875-8-34-489-323-sure-grip-1_25857147.html

its borg-wagner, not clutch but US$400 for the unit... add new bearing set if wanted and change the gears... ( US300 or so )

I know a guy that has a 5.xx gear in a 742 case with a Detroit Locker in it for $500.
Ready to run, or swap whatever ring-pinion you want in it.

PM me if interested and I'll pass his info to you.
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

Sinnamon's 8 3/4 consists of a $125 open 3.23 489 from Craigslist and a $500ish TrueTrac from Summit and a bearing kit.

Dr Diff is a business name. The MAN is named Cass Eslick.

ACUDANUT

I already have a dog leg 8 3/4 rear end with a 489 case under the Charger. I want a sure-grip/Posi to fix this problem.  :2thumbs:

Nacho-RT74

well you have part of the parts already then

whats the gears on it ?

new carrier, new bearings on same case and allmost done... thats what I did.

had 3.23 and changed to 3.55, got a NOS set down here on a good price... bearings also locally... carrier from USA ( YUKON clutch kind  ). But can't find the seller... was loooong time ago. Seller set it up with soft grip for street use ( one spring washer per side instead two )

ACUDANUT

Thanks Nacho. Great lead. If I buy it, I will have to find someone who can rebuild mine.  :scratchchin:  I think I have 3.23 gears in my dog leg right now.

mopar0166

I looked up Dr. Diff, says it is out of stock.   I was looking at Moser which is about 1800.

Guess ill look for one at Carlisle swap meet.

ACUDANUT

My problem with swap meet parts (3rd members) is they can look like they work, but once you put it under the car and hammer it, they don't work.  Clutches or whatever wear out and it is a expensive gamble.
Been there, done that. Never again.

Nacho-RT74

clutches expensive ?... I think they are on $70-80 rate, and can be done at home by yourself

$1175 New 3rd members from Mancini Racing. Enter "TAXMAN" in comments box on April 21-22. I clicked the link for more info, and the 3.73 doesn't come up. Looks like regular price is $1395.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is.

mopar0166

nice, ill have to look into it

ACUDANUT

Okay, but it still sucks when your told it works great with no problems, only to find out it has to come back out.  :brickwall:

Kern Dog

A differential or axle shop should be able to test it on a bench. A guy I deal with said the "breakaway" should be around 100 ft/lbs. I brought in a 4.30 CONE type SG that a guy gave me. It started to slip at 40 ft/lbs! WEAK !

Thanks, Nacho but that thread is not as critical of the Mancini diff as I expected.

Nacho-RT74

Well, the post of GY3 sounds like a critic to me. Sure the rest are opinion for diff options. Pretty weird nobody else has posted its opinion about the OP question but just him
