Does every bolt holding the grill together have to break?

Taking apart these two '69 grills, and every single bolt is breaking, or rounds off and has to be drilled out.  Still, these grills are a work of art, and for the life of me, I can't believe the bean counters and stuffed shirts at Chrysler gave the go ahead to build the greatest looking car ever made.  A few broken bolts.  Who cares?  It'll be worth it when done.

I never even try to turn the bolts that mount the plastic. Cut the heads off with a whizzer . After you get it removed from the header panel. Cut the clips in half with whizzer. After that your all set. No broken plastic.

Good idea.  I started with the cracked plastic grill with good metal, and even that one has all rusty fasteners.  I have another rusted up grill with all good plastic, so I'll drill and Dotco the fasteners.

Stupid question coming up....what's a whizzer? Any chance you could post a link or picture? Perhaps it's called another name?

I'm thinking a whizzer is a cutoff wheel, either on a Dremel or die grinder.

A whizzer is a trendy word used to describe a tool that uses a rotary disc to cut things. It can be air powered or electric. Some call them a whizzer wheel.

In my experience... the answer is yes.   You can soak 'em up with PB blaster but sometimes that doesn't even help.

You were gonna buy a kit of new fasteners anyway.   :Twocents:

Yes. It is a slang term for a cut off tool . Most have a 3 inch wheel. You can also get the wheel (disc) to fit electric grinders......

The fasteners holding the end pieces to the center section are the worst. Kept getting to hot and melting the plastic. I ended up using a water hose or hose pipe if you prefer, to keep them cool while whizzing them off.

Taking apart 68-69 charger grilles always suck, very time consuming but well worth it.

I think I got them from vans or laysons. I bought them at Carlisle. Try those guys or the reputable vendor of your choice. Maybe Dante has them, try calling him.

Pretty sure all my fasteners were seized and most of my plastic brackets were broken. :rotz:
