I have an opportunity to buy a 1973 dodge charger, but the guy wants $4200.00 for it. The car needs work, but the engine runs. What are these things really worth? It seems a bit high to me...

RD

we need pics, engine combo, SE or Rallye or base model, interior options, etc. in order to assess its actual worth.  welcome to the site!

need a lot more details than that to make any judgement.  pics would help.

thanks for welcoming me here. I do not have pics, I told the guy I am passing on the deal, he told me to call back if I change my mind. The car has a 318 in it, the body needs paint. the interior is green and needs replacing. There is a little rust under the car, not too bad though. The Tranny is leaking and the differential is really wet. I dont knw if this helps, but the guages are not round, they are togther in a long and rectagular format. I am thinking, that that rules it out as a rally, but not sure. I do not have pics. What do these cars go for in general?

Accourding to NADA, he is asking a fair price.  A 1973 Charger with a 318 in fair to poor condition is still worth $5,115.00  (If you put any stock in their values)  Otherwise, its whatever the market will bear.  (In other words, how badly do you want it?)

$4200 for a plain jane 318 car with issues is too much. You could do better than that on ebay. sounds like a $2,000 car to me.

Interesting and thanks for all the replies, I was thinking the same thing $2000.00 car. Next question, anyone selling one, I am in the market?

RD

check the for sale ads and I am not meaning that to be a smart ass.  They are located on the front page of the forum, just have to scroll down a tad.

Are the 71-74 chargers easier to find then the challengers are. How about parts, I hear of "Year One" but parts are marked up on mopar and I hear are generally hit and miss to find. I learned to ask a lot of questions after the problems I had with my 1976 jet boat after I bought it, later to find out too late.

I just picked up a 68 4 speed car so my 73 must go.   ( This just happened this morning ) The car overall is nice, 440 auto, buckets.  see pic.  I am asking $7500.00 for whole car or 5000.00 with out engine and trans.  PM if you are interested.

edit: sorry mods, any other posts about this car will be in cars for sale section ;)

Considerably.  They are also considerably cheaper, but have FAR less repoped parts.

Where do you live? I just picked up a 73 Charger SE Bhrome (not sure of spelling). Its got a rally dash, rear sway bar. 400 motor, 727 trans 8 3/4 rear, buckets with a buddy seat, A/C, cruse control, green outside and white inside. Rus but needs paint and interior. I cant decide to keep it as an investment or sell it. I need $1200 to break even. But I would like to make a little on it. $1500 and you pick it up. I'm in Bakersfield Calif. If your interisted PM me and we'll talk.

I live in Dallas Texas. Does it run and drive? do you have the title in your name (big problem out here in Texas with that, as not many do) Any pics you can send?

It runs but I don't know how well yet. I just picked it up last Friday and haven't had time to compleatly check it out. As far as title goes. It is not in the system. So there is no problem with getting a clear title. He did give me a bill of sale. But here in Calif all I will need is to file for lost title. I'm not computer savy but I can take pics and send them in the mail if you want them. But you will need to give me an address. Its been sitting for 17 years so its really dirty. Its got a new carb and tune up. New altenator and relay. I plan on working on it this week to see just how bad of shape it's really in.
