Could not take the blue paint anymore, decided it's Happy Birthday, General Lee. Besides, the car was solid, and perfect for a conversion.

I scuffed it, and it's in primer now. Peeling the vinyl top, next. I'll leave the chrome trim, like the tv cars had.

Car was a 60k mi original time capsule., but since it had one repaint (30 years ago), I figured it was time. Besides, who didn't grow up thinking they were Bo Duke  :scratch chin:

I'd post pics, but the 200kb size is annoying. Anyways, yee haw!!

Personally, I am beyond tired of looking at Generals, but, if you were to build a rough around the edges version that's actually built to hold up to a heavy thrashing, and can be driven through the desert flat out, that could be interesting.

The very last thing I wanted was a GL.....I'm in a country with probably less that twenty (guess!) Chargers on the road at any one time....so why are they nearly all GLs?...well at least the ones I see that are actually driven. Lack of imagination would be my guess. No problem with a good GL ......but there are too many now imo.

There are too many triple-black '68 Charger RTs.

Too many people cut up decent solid '69 Coronet 4drs to save worthless '69 Charger hulks.

Where does this thinking end?

Some things are popular for a reason.  Can't blame people for that.

JR

It would be one thing if the General was made from a '77 LTD sedan, and nobody gave two craps about the car otherwise.

But a 69 Charger is cool enough on its own merits, it just puzzles me that anyone would bother building a general when you're free to build the car however you like.

Not to mention, there are enough of them out there already. Why not buy one already done, if you just wanna pretend to be bo and luke?

Why goof up a perfectly good '68 Mustang with green paint and no badges if you just wanna be Steve McQueen?

Why goof up a nice Plymouth muscle car if you just wanna build a Richard Petty clone?  Petty won races in many cheaper bodystyles too.

Not enough people buy already-done examples of any muscle car.

Projects are always too popular in relation to restored cars.  Same reasons apply to GLs as anything else.

JR

I hear what you're saying Mike, but I just don't get it.

There are probably 10 generals on eBay right now. Why bother building another one?

I see one GL on Ebay right now.  It's a non-converted 68.  If a buyer wants a resonably accurate GL then it offers nothing but a raw-material '68 Charger and a set of repro Vector wheels.  For $60,000.   Believe it or not, many GL fans would rather build their own than buy something like that.

I agree there are too many of them being built by (and sold to) people who are barely even Dukes fans.  I wonder who buys a lot of them.

JB400

I would say that the people that buy a GL are the ones that already had a 69 Camaro or a Mustang of any year.

For those that say that people that build GL's have no originality, the same can be said of those that build their car back to stock. :Twocents:

I'm still considering a GL build. But first....

People that are buying General Lees are the kids that grew up with the show and finally have some disposable income. Every American  kid that grew up in my era loved that car.

I agree, I loved the show and the car.
In 2000 when I got my 70 Charger, I never even considered any General Lee theme of any kind. Sure, I like attention but you really cannot hide from people driving a car that is the most popular TV car in history. Who wants to be in the spotlight every single time you drive the car?

Yup, first episode aired on my birthday, January 26th 1979. Two legends were born that day!!!  Me and the General :nana:

Me too...but I was hatched on the same day twelve years earlier...26th January 1967.....I'm still recovering from the realisation that I'm 50 ...but the pain gets slightly less day by day!

Yeah that had occurred to me too.  The thread started the same day as the AF joke about the Hemi Dart quarter skins.

The custom is that pranks can only be perpetrated until twelve o'clock noon. After that time, anyone who tries to play a prank is himself (or herself) the fool. So who knows, lol.

It was my lame attempt at an April Fools joke. Sorry. I won't strip the B5 paint for another General Lee clone. We already have a GL, so that's covered

ElDoradoCuda

I thought it was a perfect April 1 joke.  And it got me - especially since my all time favorite Mopar color is B5, and I had to watch my B5 73 Barracuda with matching interior get painted red with black interior by the guy that bought it from me.

JR

I'm not surprised it was an April fool's joke, but I'll take an opportunity to discuss my distaste for Generals when I see one.  :icon_smile_big:

Personally, I think a 69 Charger is comparable to a men's 3 piece suit. Stylish, comfortable, makes any man look good, and will never go out of style. Such as this, for example.

Here is the clothing equivalent of a standard 69 Charger in almost any color.

Looks classy, would be respected anywhere, and will never go out of style.

Now, here's the suit equivalent of a 69 Charger wearing a General Lee costume:

When Larry the Cable Guy yells Git R Dunn, I wonder if he is talking about cleaning ALL of the food from the buffet table. HOLY Crap that dude has swelled up! He looks like he was stung by 200 bees.
Funny guy but what the hell is with "The Cable Guy" bit anyway?? Has this guy ever wired a house for cable TV ? How about for a satellite dish? Fiber Optic???
