It's less bad than ripping off a forum member.

Hans Ludke still walks free.  I'm not too excited about the justice system yet.

Not all VIN swaps are done for nefarious reasons.  Some states make it a lot easier to deal with missing VINs than others.

Who stands to make a dirty profit by swapping a 318 VIN between a couple of non-stolen bodies that haven't even been on the road in years?

I've never done it, I would rather spend extra money to avoid it, but . . . meh.  I'm not gonna point fingers at somebody else for doing it.

No, and when I do it I'm posting the Vin and car so it will be noted. I just want to revive that cool fender tag

Car and parts thieves should get the same thing as horse thieves did in the old west.

So, how do dynacorn reproduction bodies work? Are you supposed to get a homebuilt title?

Mike DC

They treat it like a glorified replacement part.  You don't get a new VIN for a replacement fender or engine block, you just transfer the VIN from the existing car you are repairing.  Treat the new unibody like that.

For all-new cars created from repro parts, that are dupes of a mass-produced older car . . . the law hasn't really tackled that correctly yet.  And I fear it may never.

As it is, we've got trainwreck of inconsistent laws from state-to-state when it comes to titles & VINs & custom creations.

Car theft absent of violence is not taken very seriously on the law books. I've never understood why.

I've been off on a British car tangent recently and in England they have a whole different way of looking at it.  Basically, when the car rusts out just pull the parts off and put them on the new body.  I'm not sure how they deal with VIN transfer.  They use the original stampings and jigs bought from the factory when production stopped.

I don't condone swapping VINs here.  BUT if all 50 states had the same process that documented the original VIN and allowed swapping to a newly manufactured shell with a new VIN and documented destruction of the original shell, then I'd think about it.

If you use a new body in the UK you CANNOT use the original VIN (although this happens every day I'm sure)....a new one will be allocated.....or strangely you can make up your own!! Just helped rebody an MGB that was beyond repair...although the original plan was to repair. To be honest we were thinking about transferring the numbers across but conscience got the better of us....rightly so. All the experts could easily tell the rebodies from the original.....mainly because the replicas are so much better made than the British Leyland crap we were replacing.....LOL! We were allowed to keep the original registration number though even though under there own rules it should have been reregistered as a Q plate...although this is very easy to change back to an ordinary one if you know how.!!!

To quote the DVLAs own rules to keep the original VIN and registration (license) number it must......"be rebuilt from genuine period components from more than one vehicle, all over 25 years old and of the same specification as the original vehicle"....so that's rebodies with new metal out. If you could find a "new old stock" body....Yeah right....you could transfers everything over inc the Vin numbers. Seems wrong to me....and why would you as the NOS shell would have its own age related VIN and could get a new age related plate.
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you !!

Try getting a top-grade bicycle stolen.

It could be a titanium-frame job worth $5000.
Lots of times the authorities will mentally brush it off like a $75 Huffy.
