What kind of primer and paint were used on the Chargers originally ?

All this talk about having to use epoxy primer to get everything to stick
Do not think they had that stuff back then and there seems to be more than a few out there with factory paint still on them this long after the fact

What is wrong with using just regular primer over clean metal and then painting it shortly after to seal it up ?

Is there a primer sealer that is not paint if there is going to be some time between start and finish ( more than a week )

Hi,

Common repair paint systems used a lacquer based primer surfacer back then and Chrysler  may have used a similar primer. The finish paint was definitely acrylic enamel. Any primer other than epoxy primer will allow water to penetrate so they are not good for storage coverage. A week between primer and paint is not a problem with the older primer as long as it doesn't get wet.

Your right the old paint systems did hold up fairly well but, they contained heavy metals such as lead that can no longer be used in paints. Of course the newer urethane paint systems hold up well but are a hazardous material in their own right when applying them.
