Spectacular? Not the term I would've used but okay.

I'd actually be impressed if these guys actually started using catch ramps and driving the car away instead of just chucking it up in the air and letting it come crashing back down.

Kinda breaks the illusion of theater when the General breaks into a million pieces upon landing, doesn't it?

wouldnt a full tube chassis like a stadium truck with a charger body set over it be much better...could be used over and over and hell might even survive a jump if it lands right

Here is the interview after with the driver. At the end they do a short walk around. Most of the car is fake. Really fake. The tailight panel is a picture. The chrome is aluminum foil.

When I saw it on the local news I thought "Well, they wrecked another '69!"

The cars they use are usually so rusted that I'm afraid the driver is going to get hurt.... They have build videos on YouTube. Seriously though, the cars they use are not restorable.

The Knight Rider TV show tried a tube chassis & fiberglass Trans Am in the early 1980s.  It didn't fly well (too light), didn't look the same, still cost a lot, and wasn't as safe.  They were back wrecking real T/As (brand new ones) before long.

The sheetmetal crumpling is the only thing absorbing the impact on a car jump.  A stadium truck has big tires & a couple feet of suspension travel to swallow all that force.

The heavy weight is what makes the car fly so well.  For the same given speed & ramp, more weight means farther flight.  You can throw a golf ball farther than a ping-pong ball.

the problem with that is the driver would not fair so well.  the reason they went with the charger for the dukes in the first place was because of the unibody design, basically collapsed on landing.  a full frame car would transfer most of the energy of the crash into the driver.

if you think about it, most of the police cars got flipped or some other crash as compared to most of the generals jumps they tried to land flat.

Mike DC

What BaldwinVette77 said.

Aluminum foil tape in place of chrome trim, cardboard/sheetmetal grilles, printed decals for taillights, no dashboard/interior stuff to speak of, etc.  There isn't much left to take beyond the chassis running gear.  The drivetrain gets pulled out & re-used whenever possible.  Some of the bodies have been jumped more than once.

Kern Dog

I'm sure that the reason the Police car jumps looked worse was because the show writers wanted the inept Rosco-Enos-Cletus look like they didn't have the skills that Bo and Luke had.
The choice for the Charger was not based on the uni-body design. It was because Dodge and Plymouth were really popular in the south where the showwas supposed to take place.

The cop cars were uni-body also.

^75-78 coronets are uni-bodys as well.  When they did jump them you can see the front clips fold up on impact.

There was nothing in this car to restore. Didnt even have a title. They had to build a frame under it to even mount a rear and drivetrain. I think he said 5 gallons of bondo went into this one... lol.

I do not see this bringing big money. . even on E-Bay.  Though I am speculating, the owner probably sees it as his golden ticket.

Like come on guys, lets bring a little precision to the screen.

Have a catch ramp drive away and do a power turn with tires smoking for drive by.

QuoteLike come on guys, lets bring a little precision to the screen.

I used to feel that way years ago.  But after seeing some of the early live GL jumps in person (and up close, not 70 yards away behind a NASCAR fence) I started feeling differently.

You can watch GL jumps on TV/youtube any time.  What's different about seeing them live is that the sheer mechanical violence ISN'T sanitized out of it.  You gain a whole new perspective on the TV footage.  Landing-ramped jumps are impressive in a different way but I think there's room for a few car-wrecking GL jumps now and then.  IMO you've missed out if you are a big 'Dukes' fan and you have never seen a huge car-smashing GL jump in person.

I would rather see them keep doing real car-wrecking jumps, but use some crap POS car like a Caprice Classic or Crown Vic.  The hours of bondo & patchwork on these GL stunts cars could be spent making some other car look a bit more like a '69 Charger.  It doesn't need to be that close.  Just use some sheetmetal & pop rivets to get it nearer to an overall Charger shape.  The orange GL uniform will do the rest.

68RT440

These outfits that put on the jumps should try and get a sponsorship from AMD. Then all they would have to do is build a tube chassis and pop rivet all of the sheet metal onto the chassis...similar to a circle track car. They could even incorporate the push bar into the chassis to help protect the front end. Then they could jump, hammer, bondo, repint, etc. over and over until the panel is not usable anymore...then just rivet on a new AMD piece...
1968 Charger R/T, matching numbers 440/727, black with green top and interior, currently getting restored by me

Posted on: Today at 04:31:19 PM Posted by: 68RT440

Yes.

The crumpling unibody is the only thing absorbing the impact on a jump like this.  The wheels get slammed up into the chassis so hard that the springs/shocks might as well not even be there.

Even if you could get the suspension to resist more, and you could guarantee that the wheels would hit the ground first (not the front or rear body overhangs) there still isn't enough wheel-travel distance.  Stadium trucks use 24-36".  A Charger has about 7" in front and about 11" in back.  And then there's the tiny volume of air inside a 15x7" wheel's tire, which is not enough for this job even if you pump the pressure up pretty high . . .

You can make a jump-proof vehicle but it won't look anything like a '69 Charger.

$5900 is not its Dodge-Charger-raw-material-for-restoration value.  Jumped GLs have been selling pretty well as souvenirs ever since they started being jumped at live events.  This isn't the highest figure to be paid for one.

If it was jumped at a memorable event, then yeah, that tends to add some value.  Just launching it off a plywood ramp in your backyard won't do anything for it.

The pool of buyers is limited though.  If Hans Ludke started jumping GLs for a profit then he would run out of big-money buyers pretty fast.
