Hey everyone. Last year I noticed my plugs were getting a bit of carbon on them after only a few hundred miles. I am running NGK V power 8

I was told to maybe switch to NGK V power (7) because they are a bit hotter.

Thoughts?

I have had better luck with AC plugs.

usually the correct temp grade is 5 for NGKs on a stock BB

Last time I run my car ( allmost 4 years ago ) changed to 7 due pinging ( which found is not the reason, but bad quench on a stroked 400 ), but stockish is 5
Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

What heads, cam, pistons are you running? What state are you in? How was that plug reading taken?

Thanks for the reply guys!

I am running the following.

Edelbrock rpm Heads
Mahle Forged -8cc Flat Top Pistons
Howards Hyd Roller Cam 723445-10 Cam Style: Hydraulic roller tappet
Basic Operating RPM Range: 2,500-6,400
Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift: 235
Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift: 241
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 235 int./241 exh.
Advertised Intake Duration: 288
Advertised Exhaust Duration: 294
Advertised Duration: 288 int./294 exh.

I live in upstate NY
I noticed the reverse light lenses had a bit of soot on them so I removed the plugs and checked them, that is when I took the picture.
I texted my engine builder who told me try the 7's because they run a little hotter.

looks rich to me, BUT is it rich at idle, mid,or wot, or all ?

That combo looks more like about a "6" plug combo to me.

I was thinking it might be running a bit rich as well. Maybe just at idle.
Everything runs fine, they just seemed dirty for having only about 500 miles which the builder agreed.

BSB67

Need to know the CR too, but a 6 or 7 is probably right.  My guess is it is fat too.  What carb and intake.  What is your idle quality, vacuum and rpm?

500" NA, Eddy head, pump gas, exhaust manifold with 2 1/2 exhaust with tailpipes
4150 lbs with driver, 3.23 gear, stock converter
11.68 @ 120.2 mph

Hi BSB67. thanks for the help as well. Forgive me by assuming the CR means compression ration, but if it is I believe that is 10:75:1

Edelbrock Intake rpm 7193
Carb Quick Fuel 850VS

Idles around 800 RPM and it seems to run great.
Not sure if it matters but it dyno'd at 580HP@5200/667TQ@3900

Thanks all!

I am not sure what the current part # is but the ones I have to swap in are BKR7E (4644)

Draco

Ok the number 7 is the heat range according to the NGK web page.

So I decided to get a set of NGK plugs and now I thought I would check with Masters. I have a MSD-6L with a Blaster 2 coil and according to MSD I should gap the  plugs between 50 and 60. I had them set at 45 before and the old plugs did have some carbon build up. The motor is a 502 with Edelbrock heads 10.5  comp. Any thoughts on this would be great.

I run BKR6E's in my 440,Stealth Heads, !0:1 Comp, MSD 6AL, Blaster 2 coil, gapped at .038. Never had any kind of issues with the combustion. I'm also running Fitech so I can monitor my AFRs constantly.

Draco

Thanks, I think .038 is a good starting point then after a hundred miles I will inspect them. See were I am from there.

This is what I run in my Stealths
