AMD Quarters vs extentions

Hey.

So, anyone else had problems fitting the extentions to new quarters? The extentions are more rounded in the corner than the quarters from AMD. On my old quarters they fit perfectly. Whats the best way to fix this? Worst case i can cut and re-shape the quarter corner to fit the extentions, as my car still is at the body shop. Welding and shaping the extentions would be the easiest, if it wasnt for them being made out of pot metal

mopar4don

I noticed the exact same problem on my AMD quarters (69)
I would be interested to see how this would get fixed as I have this to do on my car.

Where or how does it not fit ?  First thought would be to elongate the holes in the affected area..

The curve of the extentions doesnt follow the curves of the AMD quarters, and you can see the quarter behind there. It is not fastened in the picture, just held in place by my hand. But you can see that the curve is wrong.

cbrestorations

just cut down the middle on the high spot and push the 2 back into each other till it follows the contour

Hopefully AMD will redo the quarters, so it will be fine in the future.

Is the 1/4 extension factory original? LEON.

paironines

Heres one i did a while back, fits very nicely with no mods. Original extention with AMD quarter. Is that definately an AMD quarter you have?

phantom

I dont have pictures of the right side, but that side definately fits better, but not as good as yours. The extentions on the picture is a repro, but i have the originals too, they are not better.  Yes, these are AMD quarters for sure.

The painter is doing a flame-job on a '69 this weekend, that car is partially disassembled, and i noticed the owner had removed his extentions. So i grabbed the left side (that i have in my picture above) and test fitted it on the '69. Perfect fit.

Googled it and found others having the same problem with their AMD stuff. I already knew about the lower rear window corners and corner cap issues when i worked on my car, and those are taken care of. Too bad i didnt triple check the fitment of these extentions  :shruggy:

Roughly half of my car is AMD now, and there is not ONE of the panels that didnt acquire some tweeking to fit properly.

cbrestorations

not every quarter is exactly the same i have found

alfaitalia

....yep....even my factory quarters are slightly different from each other. The extension matches the curve of the quarter noticeably better on the right than the left.....not as bad as the op,s photo but noticeable when you are looking for it. That's 1960s Chrysler build quality for you!!!
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you !!

Dino

As long as the extensions are the correct shape, time to slice the quarter and massage it a bit. Sucks but what can you do at this point?

Usually a matter of the quarter needing to be pushed up at the corner before welding. Fit the extension when installing the quarter. These quarters are huge and can move around on the way here from china.

I welded mine wrong, had to drill out the plug welds in the middle, leaving one far let at the top still welded, then pry out in the middle as shown & re weld.

The extensions fit perfectly on my 70 with AMD quarters, but I didn't ask my body shop how much massaging they did.......

mopar4don

the drivers side vertical profile.... not to bad

Take some measurements of the end caps & 1/4 to see witch part is out of wack, bend accordingly . if is the end cap be very careful to not break it.

You cant, it will break in two pieces. Mine is like that to, but not as bad as yours. Its the shape of the quarter thats not right. The taillight panel is just the same. Need to wack it with a hammer.

I had a similar issue with one side of mine after AMD quarters. I took a ballpeen and gently persuaded it to go where it belonged.

Nor are the end caps, I went thru a boat load of "original" end caps to find a set that would fit my 70 NOS rear qtrs satisfactory, guess what, you'll get close, but no cigar, so either mod the qtr or mod the end cap, as much as I hated to do it, I had to use metal to metal filler to contour the edge of one end cap to my liking...all part of putting a car back together better than the factory did, don't be fooled thinking the factory assembly was A+, it was far from it

A lot of people are mislead about factory tin being perfect and it wasn't, ya make it fit......

I work in a truck plant, I can vouch for that, it is much better, but not perfect.
