Not a big fan of Caddys or 50s metal at all to be honest so excuse my ignorance and any errors!....but this caught my eye. This Caddy Deville was bought by and specially modified for none other than our King Edward VIII and American socialite Mrs Wallis Simpson. If you don't know the story...in 1936, shortly after he was crowned the King said he was going to marry an American woman who had been divorced once and was waiting for her second to complete, its caused such an outcry from the people and our parliament that Edward was left with no choice but to abdicate.

The cars mods include a lift able privacy screen between the driver and rear seats and the large rear window and roof being replaced with a roof that enabled the fitting of a small oval rear window....again for privacy. You can just about make it out in my quickly snapped phone pic.

It is midway through a complete rebuild with the interior still largely untouched. the work is being carried out in an industrial unit near where I store some caravans at work. Obviously I could not resist a quick sit in a car used by a King!!

With a provenance like that I would not be surprised to see it being shipped to the USA when complete to make the most possible cash....wonder how much!!!

That is an absolutely beautiful car. I love pre 70s Cadillacs. So classy.

But given the history of this particular example, I would bet on it staying on your side of the pond. The history with Royalty over there would carry more value than back here in the U.S..

I wouldn't be surprised to see it end up in a museum.

True but there are folks over there who like anything from "the old country"! and are willing to pay for it. You only have to look at the amount of British antiques going over there at the moment to see that. Mrs Simpson had links to quite a few Cities in the US too due to her failed marriages and her father's businesses. Note "State of New York" plate on front bumper.

The builder bets that when it goes through the block the main bidders with the cash needed with be from your side of the pond...we will wait and see! If it was a classic Rolls or Bentley I could see it staying here....but US cars of that vintage didn't seem to have the same appeal.....and then of course there was the scandal...lol!

'Touche. It will be interesting to see where it ends up. It is a beautiful car where ever it goes.
