If you could order one brand new...

If you could go back in time and order a classic Charger (1966-74) brand new (but on a reasonable, everyday, average working guy budget)...what would you put on the order sheet?

But realistically, what would you really want to pay for?

Lets say that you were engaged to get married soon to the future woman of your dreams, start a family, buy a starter home, and you needed a sensible car. You talked it over with the fiance, and she agreed to combine some of her savings with yours to buy the next family car.

Now, decision time is here. You could order the hemi or whatever the Big block beast mill of that year is, if you wanted to. But it means not getting married to the girl of your dreams, no family, and not owning your own house for the next several years.

For me, Im thinking about 1973, and the Charger I would buy would be the sensible 318, with air conditioning and auto trans (so the wife can drive it, thus relieving me of a lot of cheufer duties). At least, thats what I say now as an older fellow (actually, a grandpa).

I might have thought differently if I was 22 years old and fresh out of the army again.

But enough about me. What would you guys walk into the dealership and order, if you could go back in time?

But what would you guys do?

Brand new? 1968 charger, triple black, 383 4bbl, auto, column shift- bench seat, a/c would be nice, as would power brakes, steering, discs up front, and a decent streetable gear like 3.23  :scratchchin:

i think that would be a reasonably affordable, streetable daily driver for the 70's

Man! Both those sound good to me! 70 R/T 440 4bbl 4 speed 3.55s no vinyl roof. But color?????? Sublime, Green Go, or white. Black interior with console.

Taking budget into consideration it would be hard to beat a standard 440 r/t for value. However I would have to be ordering a 71 Hemi R/T, I would do whatever life adjustments necessary to make it fit into my life.

Funny you should mention the marriage thing.  my dad bought my 70 Hemi charger off the original owner in 1972 for 2 grand because the guy was getting divorced and didn't want her to get it. He was in the right place at the right time!

ht4spd307

already have it 1969 r/t se 440 727 y3 black vinyl roof black trim a/c disc brakes leather trim tint windows power windows but brand new would be good. wouldn't have to do all this work  :eek2:

I actually took delivery of a new 69 Charger RT the day my wife and I had our first date. F5 green, 440 auto, no vinyl top, light package and I don't remember anything else about it.  Got married and still had it, drove coast-to-coast several times.   Wish I had it back.

For me it'd be a 1969 year. Orange, saddle tan interior, 383 floor shift auto, and A/C.  :2thumbs:
1969 Charger 383/auto
1969 Charger R/T 440/auto (waiting to be restored)
1972 Chevelle SS clone 383 sbc
1959 Chevy Apache short bed stepside
1968 Charger (glorified parts car)
Yes, I know I have too many cars. My wife reminds me daily.

Does it have to be a Charger they would have actually built or can I imagine a bit...you know like a 69 six pack?

I didn't know what I wanted in a relationship, really, until my 30's.  So those early relationships were doomed anyway, would go more on car.

Simple choice on a budget back then:  ($3,139 base price + $161.65 A47 option = $3,300.65 + fuel/taxes/delivery charge)

1970 Dodge Charger 500, A47 SE package, /6

There was only one of those built...

You could go cheaper with the base model in 1970 ($3,001.00), but more of them were made....

I was 9 yrs old when my parents ordered a /6 f8 green 1970 charger radio delete 3 speed on the column. There was 5 of us kids so 7 people on week long family vacations pulling a pop top camper cross country. Still remember the look on gas station attendants faces when they opened the hood to check the oil.
They traded it in 74 for an Aztec gold charger 318 radio delete 3speed on column.
Got a radio in 78 when they traded for a Monaco wagon. No air on any. Same year I got a 1970 f8 green r/t auto charger.

John_Kunkel

I'd order a '68 Charger, RR1 Burgundy Metalic with black buckets, 383 4-speed and every luxury whistle and bell.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Don't see the point to the thread. Aint happening and irrelevant. Prices are way too high to even depress one self of what they would get back when things were cheap.
