Nice find TanTop!

Nice price too, if you can get it! :scratchchin:

4-SPEED, 1969 Charger-500 is the most Coolio car in the World!

It is a nice find.  Now where is the rest of that car to make it a really great find?

A $200 transmission core with a $4200 stamp on it.

I'll buy all the HEMI 727 transmission cores you can provide with or without VIN stamps for $200 each

727 trans cores are easy to find. If it is a core (which also means a rebuild is needed)  it can be overhauled/rebuilt as needed.
As I recall the differences in the "hemi" trans were not hard to come by.

Please correct me as it has been a long time since I was up to speed on those few differences.

BTW I agree that $4200 is something that might move the original car owner to pay but if that was the case it feels almost like black mail.  It's little wonder why some are moved to change stamped numbers on stuff when something like comes up. :slap:

I agree the $4200 is extortion money (but $200 is laughable)  440HP cores are in the $300-500 range & there are 1000s of them

the HEMI only internal parts are difficult & expensive to come by today & NO guarantee they are useable and/or in the case on eBay

Now that you mention it this trans. could have been worked on in the past and there is no telling what it is like inside.

Is there a difference between a 426 hemi 727 and a 440 727? I know there are different part numbers just wondered if a hemi internals differed from a 440?
Thanks

Yes there is. Front clutch pack is 5 discs in the Hemi instead of 4 in the 440. Which makes the front drum different. I think there is a difference in one of the bands also. May be a few other items also I don't know about. I believe the 1970 & up Six Pack cars used the same trans as the Hemi. Hard part is there is no way externally to identify a Hemi trans other than the stamped number. If someone has a way I'd love to hear it.  Hemi 4 speed is easy to identify by the input shaft. Not so on the Hemi autos.

Maybe it's time to answer these questions in some sort of --spread sheet?

My feeble memory about the "hemi" auto trans. was extra clutch plates and springs in the front drum. as well as a four gear planetary (vs a three gear).

Question---was that trans. a part of standard issue for  (example) 440 six pac cars?

As for the 4sp trans.  We all hear the term "hemi trans" all the time.  The two basic kinds (that I have experience with) were an 18 spline input (with larger bearing and pilot) and the 23 spline as being the other one.--(After 1971 I lost track of this sort of stuff) :shruggy:
It would be news to me to find out that the HD 18 spline 4sp trans was "hemi only".
My recall was the -HD 18 spline- 4sp was used in 440 track pac and six pac cars as well as hemi cars.

BTW my information and experience comes from the FSM and rumor. :slap:
I look forward to correction on this.

I'm learning here also. I did not know about the 3 versus 4 gear planetary. One other difference also the torque converters were different / smaller on a Hemi auto.

My understanding is yes 70 and up Six Pack cars got the same trans as the 66 thru 71 Hemi cars. So yes standard issue in those Six Pac cars. I'm not sure what went into the 69 1/2 A12 Six Pac cars.

Yes I agree the -HD 18 spline- 4sp was used in 440 track pac and six pac cars as well as hemi cars. All I was eluding to on those was the difference between the 18 & 23 and how easy it was to visually identify the difference from the outside. The well known "Hemi" 4 speed is much more available because like you say it was used in the track pac cars so considerably more were made. Also they were not discarded because they were easily identifiable unlike the Hemi auto which from the outside looked the same as a standard 440 trans.

I do believe the governor in the 727 is different between a 440 issue and 426 Hemi and 440six pack.

A few years back I had a car 727 that was blown, broke and needing a trans I knew I had a short shaft 727 from an old rv I parted out. I decided the take all the guts from the rv trans and use them in the car housing to save money. When I pulled the rv trans apart I noticed it had and extra set of clutches and a 4 gear planetary set.  :2thumbs:

Hi Guys,

There is a lot more differences than you may think!
The front drum is totally different to stock 727 ones, its approx 1/2" wider and takes a special wide band.
Along with the usual planetary upgrades, extra clutches etc., a rare beasty indeed!

But I wouldn't use a pre 71 Trans myself due to FRONT-DRUM bearing failure!
Seen a few Front-drum explosions over the years and the pre 71 narrow bearing drum seems to be the culprit.
Much rather use a 71-up hp trans with a COPE 'Bulletproof' front drum for $600, its life insurance, (or at least FEET insurance) lol.

gtx6970

There is no  way that's trans is worth anything near that amount. Even if I had the car it belonged to.

There are aftermarket parts avail today that are far superior to what that trans ever had it in at any time.
To me its a $1000 case ,,,at best.

I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

GD have a reputation for KEEN pricing!
Now at $4000, so getting realistic.
If it was a Daytona XX trans it would a lot more methinks?

As I have said before, anyone who knows anything about 727 trans would always go 1971-UP, they is way better in many ways... :2thumbs:

As we know, XX is a special code in the World of Mopar...
