My son got a 90 Integra (I know , I've failed as a father) and he was coming to our house and it just died. Just replaced the clutch , not 50 miles on it since. Kinda makes a "blub"/pop out the exhaust. First thought was timing belt. Someone told him some of those engines get trashed if the belt goes. Has spark , I can hear the fuel pump. We should get to look at it tomorrow night. I know nothing about these cars. Any suggestions would be appreciated ( I already said a stick of dynamite). Thanks

Honda's have timing belts and are very particular about changing the belts on time. Every 60k or so I think.

If the belt breaks the valves hit pistons.

Does the engine have compression?

Haven't really done anything yet. Towed it home and then after I went to bed last night he pulled the plugs and the "wells"  had oil in them. So we'll check it out when I get home. Thanks for the quick reply

those older hondas are famous for distributor failures, and yeah if the belt fails or if you ever rotate the engine the wrong way by hand it can cause the valves to hit the pistons. also they have a coil specific fuse in the fuse box.

I would say check the distributor as well, it may be as simple as the cap and rotor (I had a 91 prelude many years ago, was driving along just fine and it just died.  Changed cap and rotor and it came back to life).

I work on hondas for a living. If you can hear the fuel pump then your main relay should be fine. If you have spark then the timing belt should still be intact but may have jumped. That year integra has a computer located in the passenger foot well. Pull the carpet back and turn the key on and watch the led on the face on the computer to see if there's any flash codes. The spark plug tubes being filled with oil is no big deal, there's a few o rings under the valve cover that go bad and very easy to replace. If the timing belt did launch that motor has a good chance of living threw it. I've bought quite a few Hondas that have broken there timing belt and the owner swears the valves are bent, first thing I do is throw another belt on it and start it up. Only 2 had bent valves out of I don't know how many. The only big killer to these motors is lack of oil, the cams will starve and lock to the cylinder head and game over cause the heads don't have serviceable cam bearings.

Nwcharger , I think it is the timing belt. It has about a half inch of play just between the cam gears. The belt looks new though ,so maybe tensioner. My son did a side job and as he was arriving the home owner was walking out with a for sale sign to put on his truck. My son now has a truck and will look at the integra soon. His son wants it. Thanks to all who replied. Hurry summer!!
