Hey all-
Looking to get my '69 on the road finally. It's been off the road since 1985. Stored inside since 1998. It was originally a 318-2bbl 904 auto car. It now has a '68 383-4bbl 727 auto from a '68 Newport. On the topic of wiring, what's different and what's the same? I have all of the original wiring in the car. What can I reuse if it looks good? Should I reuse any of the original stuff or should I huck it all out?

Thanks!

Don't reuse the wiring, Yearone sells M&H factory wiring harnesses, best plug and play on the market.

Would I need to order wiring for a '68 383 or a '69 383?

'69.
i did the same thing you are about to do. my car was factory with a 318. and the PO put a 383 in it. it ran ok, but the wiring was old, all messed up, and it had a Jacobs Box in it and i wanted to return it to factory so i could trouble shoot it easier. that and the ammeter fried and i had to replace the dash harness too. so when i ordered all new harnesses i got the one for 383 big block. i cant remember what was different. but those harnesses along with the FSM, it was easier to remove the old and install the new.

Here is my thread with pics so you can see how bad my wiring was.

Engine wiring only? I'd get the harness from Evans (unless you have a 20% coupon through Year One or Classic Industries). There shouldn't be any changes between those years. I'd probably go ahead and get the pre-made harness for electronic ignition. It won't be "stock" but if you plan to drive I'm going to assume you aren't running points.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Definitely electronic ignition. I'm hoping to replace all of the wiring in the car at once.

All? Someone's throwing around some cash! :D

The biggies are the dash and engine harnesses. If you had decided to do this around Christmas you'd have saved a bunch of money. I think I got a dash harness for about $350 once. If you're not in a super hurry then maybe try waiting for Easter or Memorial Day (end of May for you Canadians). Now that Classic carries the M&H stuff you may be able to find a coupon without waiting. If you go through Year One then buy everything at once so you don't get bitten multiple times by shipping fees. There are a bunch of little harnesses. I don't know if the headlight/front wiring harnesses are still being reproduced (at least not the "correct" ones).
