Is this the right fender tag / a proper pricing?

Hi Experts,

I have a question. I've been trying to decode this vin number on a Fender tag, using multiple online decoders. However, they al keep saying it's a '71, while it is attached to a '68.

Do any of you know what's up? I only found one decoder actualy stating it as a '68. Am I entering something wrong, or is this not the right tag for the car?

The bottom row of numbers reads:
XP29 61 5 43 228 186737

I see there is a difference in a '68 tag and later years (and so there are different decoders). The tag does look like displayed in the picture.

So does it mean you can't see build year on '68 mopar fender tag? Or am I dead wrong on both cases?

They won't on a 68 tag....the last numbers on the tag are the VON - vehicle order number

I could not get all the options on the second line down from the top to enter in the decoder but this is what it said

For future reference, all 2nd gen Chargers (68-70) VINs start with "X" such as "XP" or "XS".

All 3rd gen Chargers (71-74) start with "W", such as "WH", "WP", or "WL".

Owner says it's a rust free car, with 383 big block that runs. Being overseas, im waiting for a bit of visual confirmation before pulling the trigger. If it is what the owner says it is, i think it's a decent project to drive while fixing it up.

It kinda reminds me of the Dukes episode "Happy Birthday General Lee" before they painted it orange. Cheap black paint and tan interior. But your front end damage isn't near as bad as the general's.

Car looks very green inside and old
Fender tag is saying gold and I do not see any gold around the doors or interior

Interior needs to be done yes. But the rest seems to be fairly original.



My main motivation is the car being solid. What do you guys think it is worth? Running 383 ac car, if it is completely rust free as the seller is saying?

Man I don't know. I suppose if you just have to have it.....but I see minimum $10K of work before even painting there.  Personally I think you could do much better with a little more up front. I know that's easier said than done.....

But then I'm not shopping for a 68 right now so I don't know what is out there at the moment.

So.........my opinion is hereby worthless.      You just gotta have a 68 huh?

The problem is, i cant seem to find big block '68 Chargers that run and completely solid anywear below $20k. Thats why im wondering if the price is too far off, or just the way the market is now.
