Is this the right fender tag / a proper pricing?

Hi Experts,

I have a question. I've been trying to decode this vin number on a Fender tag, using multiple online decoders. However, they al keep saying it's a '71, while it is attached to a '68.

Do any of you know what's up? I only found one decoder actualy stating it as a '68. Am I entering something wrong, or is this not the right tag for the car?

The bottom row of numbers reads:
XP29 61 5 43 228 186737

Sorry to bother you with such a noob question. Thank you for helping out.

Here is a 68 style tag...does yours look like this?

crj1968

Removed because possible bad info !

Reezee

Thanks guys. Learned something new again!

I see there is a difference in a '68 tag and later years (and so there are different decoders). The tag does look like displayed in the picture.

So does it mean you can't see build year on '68 mopar fender tag? Or am I dead wrong on both cases? ;D :shruggy:

They won't on a 68 tag....the last numbers on the tag are the VON - vehicle order number

For future reference, all 2nd gen Chargers (68-70) VINs start with "X" such as "XP" or "XS".

All 3rd gen Chargers (71-74) start with "W", such as "WH", "WP", or "WL".

Thanks guys! That is good to know.

The car im looking at is this one:

Owner says it's a rust free car, with 383 big block that runs. Being overseas, im waiting for a bit of visual confirmation before pulling the trigger. If it is what the owner says it is, i think it's a decent project to drive while fixing it up.

It kinda reminds me of the Dukes episode "Happy Birthday General Lee" before they painted it orange. Cheap black paint and tan interior. But your front end damage isn't near as bad as the general's.  :icon_smile_wink:

Think I would really want to see it in person
Car looks very green inside and old
Fender tag is saying gold and I do not see any gold around the doors or interior  :shruggy:

Interior needs to be done yes. But the rest seems to be fairly original.

My main motivation is the car being solid. What do you guys think it is worth? Running 383 ac car, if it is completely rust free as the seller is saying?

That is beter, isnt it? Hahaha.

Anyway, the car seems fairly solid, judging from pictures.

Do you guys think that in the current market a car like that is worth somewhere in the low 20's?

Man I don't know. I suppose if you just have to have it.....but I see minimum $10K of work before even painting there.  Personally I think you could do much better with a little more up front. I know that's easier said than done.....

But then I'm not shopping for a 68 right now so I don't know what is out there at the moment.

So.........my opinion is hereby worthless.   :icon_smile_big:   You just gotta have a 68 huh?   ;)

Looks more like low teens at most in my opinion :shruggy: :Twocents:

Reezee

Thank you guys for letting me know.

The problem is, i cant seem to find big block '68 Chargers that run and completely solid anywear below $20k. Thats why im wondering if the price is too far off, or just the way the market is now.

The problem is people just want to much for there junk, And people still buy the overpriced junk. :brickwall: :shruggy: :slap:

Arbitrage123

I recently picked up my first 68 and ended up being one of those who overpaid. I am quickly finding as others have said the interior can add up fast. Also, don't trust the no rust comment if you can't see it try and find someone who will look it over. It is well worth a few hundred bucks to find out. I didn't and it has cost me. My only upside is mine is a RT with matching engine.

It must really be tough being out of country and trying to buy, often sight unseen, an old car with questionable histories.  :Two cents:  It's tough enough in the states, given scammers and overpriced junk

Reezee

It is. I decided to pass on this car.

Lennard was nice enough to offer me to go check the car out in a couple of weeks. But doing some math and calculating the things needed to get it road worthy according to European law, the cost would be to high in comparison with the actual "worth" of the car.

I'd like to thank Lennard for immediately agreeing to do such a thing for a complete stranger overseas!

Anyway, perhaps it is opportunity for someone else:

Still way cheaper than anything in a similar "rust free" condition I found in the UK when I was looking. You will be lucky to find much cheaper that in Europe that's not a bare rusty shell with a seized/incomplete engine.
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you !!
