Battery still going strong

I know that I've brought this up before, but the batteries in my '04 2500 cummins diesel are still going strong after twelve years.  I've never experienced this type of battery life before.  I bought the truck new and it only has a little over 100K miles on it to date.  We have cold winters but nothing seems to have fazed them yet.  Yea, I know they will be dead tomorrow, but I've been told that for years.  One day at a time, I guess......

My batteries in my '04 2500 with the Cummins are the originals, too. :Twocents:

Cool!  Maybe it's got something to do with the batteries that they used that year.  I think they were made by Johnson Controls........

Standard replacements dont last long either.

Maybe, original factory installed batteries are of better quality? I ordered my '02 Dakota in Nov. '01. The original (Group 27) battery just died this summer. I can't complain. 14 years out of the original battery is great .

Apparently '04 was a good year for batteries👍

must be an '04 thing, my cousin still has his.
my '06 cummins had one go out at about 75k, so i had the dealer replace both at the same time. those lasted 30k or so. then i went to autozone. i have 130k on the truck now (its for sale btw)

Where is the battery mounted on that vehicle? I had a 1997 Plymouth Breeze that had its factory battery last until I donated it 2 years ago. I kept using the battery to test the electrical system on my Charger and used it as a trade in for my new Optima Battery last year.  The Plymouth Breeze had the battery hidden in the wheel well, away from the elements, not sure if this was a factor?  :shruggy:

It's a diesel, so there are two batteries.  One is located by the firewall on the passenger side and the other is on the front of the engine compartment on the drivers side.  Pretty standard locations......

Just replaced the batteries in my 04 Cummins this year.

Quite odd considering that the average new car battery lasts just over 4 years.
My 275K 2007 Ram is on the 3rd battery. The wifes 115K 2003 CRV is also on its 3rd.

The original batteries in my 99 Dodge diesel lasted just over 12 years.

My theory of why they lasted so long is that there are two batteries in parallel. When you spin up the starter the battery is asked to provide a lot of current instantaneously.  This large current spike tweaks the battery plates a bit every time it happens. As this happens a bit of battery plate material comes loose and out of the grid structure of the plate. Eventually the battery fails. With two batteries this effect on any one battery is cut in half so, the battery lasts much longer.

Years ago, I worked with a Mopar guy that always installed a second battery in his cars. (Good luck finding room to do that in today's cars) He always got much longer battery life.

bull

Probably a mistake. The battery head of design didn't get the memo that they were supposed to fail after nine years.

So who made these batteries for Dodge in 04? Usually you're lucky to get more than ten years out of any battery

RECHRGD

Just on a side note:  when I had the 50K service done on the truck about seven years ago, the dealership told me that the batteries were ready to fail and needed replacement...  ::)

I just replaced this summer my original battery in my 03 dakota. Worked one day, and completely dead the next. No complaints though.

The original battery in my 2005 Dakota was still going strong with 11 years on it, I only replaced it because I felt that I was pressing my luck and didn't want to be stranded if it decided to give up the ghost.
I've also had extremely good luck with Mopar brand batteries in my muscle cars. In fact I have a Mopar brand battery I took out of my Super Bee with at least 8 or 9 years on it, that is now in my engine run-in stand and it's still going strong. It must to be 11 or 12 years old now.

I had to replace the original batteries in my '04 2500 Cummins diesel yesterday. :'(

You'd think they would last more than 12 1/2 years.  :shruggy: :eek2: :smilielol:

Summer just gone I replaced the original battery in my wife's 99 Mercedes SLK230 ! Ok it's a second cars that's only done about 80,000 miles but she does lots of short journeys...so I would say that's a result. Funny thing is that when we bought it about eight years ago the p.o. warned us it was the original battery and that because it had been a bit slow to start of late it would probably not last much longer...and altered the price accordingly...lol!

I have a 2000 John Deere GT235 riding mower bought new and it still has the original battery,  Dad bought a new Ford F-100 back in 1967. I bought it from him in 1973 with the original battery. I bought a new F-150 in 1976 and in 1980 that battery took a crap, so I took the battery out of my 67 F-100 and put it in the 76. It lasted another year.  I put a new NAPA battery in that 73 Charger I bought back in 2010 and it lasted just long enough for it to go out of warranty.  :flame:

I think the name of my repro 27 battery was a (New Castle) or some name like that and it only made 3 years BUT I didn't use a charger on it to keep it fully charged.
