Pretty cool new episode of Jay Leno's garage. He's driving a 426 Hemi around L.A. and gives some pretty good hemi info.

He'd done that one once before but much shorter. But again mentioned that his wife disliked the car, LOL!
Not to pick it apart, but he was looking at the fender tag, not build sheet.
440 was not available in 66 in a B body although he didn't specifically say "in 1966". 318/361/383/426 was all.
You would think he would have had that vetted before recording, but over all a great piece.

Might be just my speakers, but that 426 hemi sounded like it was knocking/pinging when he pulls it up to his shop at the end of the video.

One interesting thing I noticed, he says it is an original Hemi car but didn't hear him mention if it is numbers matching.

A 1966 model would not have had a VIN or SO #  stamped on the block.  There's no way to identify it as THE engine (or transmission) that originally came with the car.  Dating the individual components can make it a plausible statement, but that's about it.

Jay didn't have all his facts correct but still an enjoyable video, thanks for sharing. And what's not to like about that car? His wife probably doesn't like the steelies, blackwalls and dog dish hub caps. Or maybe she drove it once and didn't like the manual brakes and steering.
I've always liked the styling of the '66 and '67 hardtop Coronets! Would love to have that car.

Thanks for the info, for some reason I thought they stamped the vin on Hemi's.

Something I learned from the video is that car manufacturers offered a 5yr 50k mile warranty back then. Amazing.
And now we have 3yr 36k mile warranties.

In the 80's and 90's Chrysler offered 7-70 on all cars (I believe).  I know I had it on my 84/86 Minivans and 87 LeBaron GTC. Used EVERY bit of it too!!!   :smilielol:

Chrysler and for that matter the rest of the industry had some serious quality issues in the early 60's. Chrysler began offering a 5/50,000 warranty in the mid 60's as a way to impress buyers with what Chrysler saw as better quality levels. Lee Iacocca did the same thing in the early 80's with his new K cars going to a 7/70,000. It's a sales gimmick that works only if your quality levels really have gone up or the warranty costs will kill you.

On the 426's, as I recall, the warranty was  90 days or 1200 miles. Just enough to get a buyer through assembly issues. Chrysler knew what people were going to do with these engines and there was no way they were going to warranty a race engine. The 426's were a $1000 option on a $3000 to $4000 car, that kept many from being sold.
