Lower Gas Prices?

I'm skeptical but here is the msg. I got:

This was originally sent by a retired Coca Cola executive. It came from one of his engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. It is worth your consideration. Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit close to $4.00 a gallon by next summer and it might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea.

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read on and join with us! By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.85 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the    marketplace..... Not sellers.  With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices.  If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, doesn't wimp out at this point.... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people. I am sending this note to 30 people. If ach of us sends it to at least ten more (30 x 10=3D 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 =3D                                                                                   3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers.
If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted!  If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE   >>>>HUNDRED MILLION >>>>PEOPLE!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.

ok good idea, but what about the fact that if nobody buys from the larger 2 companies how will the smaller oil companies handle the sudden raise in buyers. Wouldn't that cause long lines in front of the pumps, etc. Whitch than results into people going to the larger 2 again because there is no line there. You all may try that. But please you people still have no right to complain about your gas prices, it's still dirt cheap.

In most instances it is rather easy to say that gas in the US. is cheap when compared to other countries. It just makes it damn hard to swallow when someone retires and they give him a 400 gazzillion dollar retirement plan. Yes, we are pigs when it comes to gas. I agree.. But gas has become similar to air in this country and all I see is the non-rich dropping like flies.

Just because you can say that gas is still cheap in America doesn't mean that we are not being price gouged.  If you are fine with your gas prices in your country that is fine with me.  There is no good reason for these rediculous increases.  I am tired of being robbed.

Arthu®

I never said I was fine with our gas prices, they are insane. I feel robbed every time I pump some gas. But hey I still do it. That makes me just as much of a fool. And I still drive fast and push all the cars I drive to almost red line. Is that dumb yes, but than I have to pay the price (which is now $7,24 USD per gallon). I just don't see these plans (we have almost the same floating around here as well) working. It is just that I don't see anything changing any time soon and it will get worse. But if you can't change the price, change what you consume. Sell off the Charger and go drive a hybrid. Shift at 2500rpm and drive 50mph in 5th gear. Btw we have the same amount of raise in gas prices as you have. We just started out higher.

No offense taken RD.  I didn't figure it was a new thought but I did figure it would spark some lively debate.  As for selling the Charger and buying a hybrid...um no.  I didn't say I was planning on cutting down my consumption.  I am just plain sick of million dollar bonuses for oil executives.

$3.29 per Gallon!   :o     for Regular!

Heard it was over 4 buck's in SanDiego. As far as other countries paying more for gas, maybee we should look at how much of that is taxe's. The price for crude is now $70.00 a barrel? Until that price go's down prices are going to stay high.

That is our problem, we pay 64,10% taxes on gas and 51% on diesel :-\

Where's TK with the Snopes link? I'm pretty sure I explained all this earlier (several times) but this particular email is easily debunked. Your gas prices will NOT go down because you *think* you are boycotting those companies. Long story short: they sell gas to anyone else with a shortage - especially if they have a surplus. If you truly want gas prices to go down then stop using so much energy. Unfortunately, most of us are too lazy and too inconvenienced to do that so the demand stays the same (or goes up). Add in the fact that China has never heard of conserving fuel and Americans forgot how to build refineries and it's an ugly problem.

By the way, I do very well at blocking spam from my email accounts so having the same junk posted in the forum is slightly irritating. However, I guess it's that time of year again so we'll see about one per week... :P

wouldnt work really, smaller companies will become big companies and still rape you at station. Now if we could all ride bicycles for week or so to work (considering youre working couple miles away from home) That might work better

. . . and then we sit here with a straight face and act surprised  when our gas prices double (in steady manageable increments over the course of about 5 years), and all that additional money gets pumped directly into the oil industry's pockets?

   :haha:

I shoulda listened to my gut instinct and just invested everything I had into the oil industry in November of 2000.  I could have been really profiting from all this instead of just complaining & paying for it.

And don't forget no one can give up their precious SUV's and 4 WD Trucks.I live in the Suburbs and even on bad winter days the roads are clear. Why do people need 4 WD on dry roads?I can see if you like in a Rural area, but my god.

Yep, blame it on the yuppies... that's the PC thing to do these days. Yuppies, of course, are the only ones who drive gas guzzling cars aren't they? I mean, no one here actually has a car that sucks more gas than a fully loaded semi right? I think all those weinies who pay a premium for "hybrid" cars would all be considered "yuppies" wouldn't they? I mean, I don't see the neighbor kids on minimum wage driving those but maybe it's my neighborhood. Do you realize that if people would actually find the energy to put the proper amount of air in their tires then we'd save enough gas to drop the prices? Yuppies usually manage to maintain their vehicles so they aren't spitting gas out the tailpipes or leaking it on the ground but let's not think about that. Yeah, let's blame it on one single group of people because it sounds like a good target that other people will agree with. Perhaps understanding all the issues would make more sense but it's too much work (kinda like saving gas).

In the past, these discussions have brought up some good points (but accomplished nothing). RD once brought up the idea of lowering speed limits which sounds good in theory but totally impractical as far as I'm concerned. We've also discussed E85 and how it's not quite a cure-all. We've had discussions on Bio Diesel but the main problem is that it's only cheap if your time has no value and you can get the ingredients mostly free. As soon as any large scale production starts then prices will go up as well. Perhaps the environmentalists will get so sick of the gas prices that they allow someone to actually build a new refinery somewhere but that's not likely to happen either. Maybe everyone in the middle east will one day wake up and live in peace according to their "peaceful religeon". Maybe we won't have any hurricanes wiping out major cities (and their refining capabilities) in the near future. Perhaps one day people will realize that oil companies have less of a profit margin than many other companies and will whine about something else. Maybe if we could put the two biggest oil companies out of business then gas would be cheaper too...

I just filled up my tank in the Charger. $45.00 (15gal X $3.21gal = $44.94)
I will most likely have to fill it again this weekend.  :icon_smile_big:

I dunno Everette, here in S.F. Jeeps make a lot of sense... if ididnt have the 300M i'd have a Grand Cherokee most likely...

BTW: does anyone here besides me ride a bike?..
I been riding the same old Raligh 10 speed frame with '70 era  italian racing bike parts since 1978! The bike guys freak when they see it... i guess it would be like having a formula one drivetrain inna Wrangler.
but i digress..
I actually drove slower to save gas too, I reduced my avarage freeway speed from 82 mph to 70 and managed to improve my mpg number at least 10%.
ez to compute cause 300s have this really cool trip computer with many functions.
