Correct paint for '70 tail light trim panel?

What paint is widely used for restoring the '70 tail light trim panel?

I thought the finish most commonly seen was a semi gloss black. I used PPG base coat black with no top coat over it. It went on with a semi gloss sheen and barely dulled since then. It dried to a reasonably durable finish. It was painted in 2003.

Has anyone found a quality rattle-can paint that will look good for a few years?

I know, I know, I should do it right.  But this car is a driver and I likely won't get started on a restoration for at least another 8 years.

I read that Rustoleum has a great line of paints that are very durable. The only drawback is that it dries slow.

It is recommended (by manufacturer) that base coat always gets top coated with a clear for durability. Preferably a Flat, low gloss or semi gloss clear if a shiny surface is not wanted. That or use flat or semi gloss single stage. Hot Rod black for example. LEON.

According to 69 engineering drawings.......I know that St Louis used a flat-ish black and Hamtramck used Organosol.....probably due to a state law.

SEM makes nice rattle can products. I used it on the tail panel of my 68 and the interior pieces that were metal.

I painted my dash frame with the body paint, PPG Deltron 2000, very glossy.  Then I put on a coat or two of "26 Flat Clear" and the result was a very flat paint surface.  No shine.  Just what I wanted!

Just to throw another option in the mix... I have done a few tail panels and the best I have found (short of Totally Auto) was Marhyde Trim Black.  It was recommended over at the '70 Registry by one of the members and I gave it a shot and really liked it.
