I'm a newbe to the asking for help.  Your posts have answered my questions but, I haven't noticed any three speed questions. I have a 66 charger with a three on the tree and it likes to slip out of 2nd gear. What should I look for and or how to adjust the linkage. PLEASE HELP.  It only does it when i am in second and let off the gas slowing down for a stop sign or traffic.

The most common reason for an old 3 speed to pop out of gear is that the input and synchro have developed a taper on their engaging surfaces. This can be from a worn out pilot bushing or worn out input bearing. Once there is a taper on these surfaces they will continue to want to push away from each other when power is applied. Second gear will also pop out of gear but under compression, as on a hill or decelerating from a high rpm. It seems to have to do with the angle of the cut on these engaging surfaces. When either bearing is worn and sloppy the gear can oscillate and cause the taper to occur. Farm boy is right on as far as the fix, to replace both parts, along with the most likely worn bearing. The shim behind the bearing will work for a while

Hope this helps your problem...sounds like a rebuild is in order.

I have a pair of 66 Chargers, both are 4 speed cars

I had a 4-speed that would do that in 2nd also. So, I checked the shifter rod adjustment, it was off from where it should be, so I reset it per the FSM.

Still did it but not as bad, so I ran the adjuster for second out one turn.

Much better, but still happened, just less often.

Adjusted one more turn out & no more problem with it for as long as I owned the car.

Off topic but WOW that brings back memories. Learned how to drive in a 68 Firebird three on the tree. Very cool..

If it still does it after checking the linkage alignment it's probably a synchronizer going out.
