Movie Cars, Anyone?

You know, Im sure we have all noticed that back in the 60s and 70s, there were a lot of Chargers (and other Mopars) that were used in movies and on TV. Now, a lot of these cars were givencameo appearances at best. Im not talking about the ones that had a recurring role and became famous "movie cars", like the General Lee or the Hillbillies old Dodge truck. Those have a provenance with them.

Im talking about the Mopars that were used, but never became famous. For example, I noticed the guy from the Mod Squad driving an early 70s Charger in an episode. He drove the Charger up to a business of some sort and got out, end of Charger scene.

Ive seen other Mopars used for a single scene here or there, but not in a recurring use. I think that even "Shaft" used a Charger a few times, but it never became famous either.

My question here is two fold...

A...For such a role where the car never became a star in and of itself, but just made the occaisional appearance, would that count as a "Movie Car"?

B...Did the studio sometimes just borrow a car from a local dealership, and return it after filming, so that the car went on to be sold to the general public without anybody ever being aware that the car they bought at a local dealership, might have actually been used in a movie or TV set, in some bit part?

For that matter, is there any way that a current Mopar owner could ever find out if their Mopar may have ever had some small, unfamous, bit part in a movie or show, even as a background vehicle?

....is this thread because you are suspicious that your Charger might have been used in a movie??

I think it would count as a "movie car" But I doubt there would be any way to prove it especially from the 70's, when it was just another car from the era.

Nowadays many cars are leased from big companies for movie use- so that would be a way to prove it for a modern movie.

Its easy when its British car in a Brit movie.....our Licence generally plates don't change on car from the days its registered until the day its scrapped (vanity plates aside)....so easy to recognise in a film. A friend has a VW Scirocco that was "accidently" in a film....parked outside the hero's house!! Plate was clearly visible.

One of my favorite movie cars was a friends Topless Charger.  Basically it was an original concept car that got out and later used in a movie.  Super neat car.  I think the name of the movie was Truck Turner (1974).

You do realize that manufacturers provided cars as product placement to TVs and movies...  just like soft drinks and beer.

There was a website for movie cars & stars somewhere but it mostly contained cars which had a 'starring' role.

Yeah I like the idea of a movie car thread. Personally its anything but a GL that interests me. In a country where the number of B Body Chargers can be counted on two hands...well maybe a few hands (unless you are from Louisiana (US) or Norfolk(UK).....when your finger count may vary!).....the number of GLs is way too high....you have to NOT have a GL to stand out from the other B Chargers here! Lol.

My original plan was to build a Blade Charger.....but then I realised I really wanted a 69 (Blades is a 68)....so it was on to plan b.

If we could start a movie car discussion board I'll be spending a lot of time there. I'm in the process of starting my General Lee project. I could use some good information.

Yes, I know I have too many cars. My wife reminds me daily.

That post reminds me, what ever happened to the guy here who owned the three blade movie cars? Or the cars?

Yeah that movie also featured a '73 or '74 Charger that the main character drove. Yes the name was Truck Turner. Seen it awhile back and made a list of the options I saw on the car. It was just on cable a couple of times recently.

Not sure what movies these are... but it would be nice, if you know, to name the movies each charger appears in.
