Rebuilding the master cylinder and can't get the push rod to release from the principal piston.   :rotz: Any tips???  :scratchchin: THANKS!

pull the rod and piston out of the master cylinder bore.....put the rod in the vise with the piston just above the vise jaws with just enough room for a couple large screwdrivers or pry-bars...... clamp the rod tight and with some rags around the pry-bars, take the pry-bars on opposite side and pry the piston off the rod......it should only be held in by a piece of rubber hose less than 1/4" long.....

I tried that with a "pickle fork" for tie rod removal.. no go... and that was after some penetrate oil squirted in to even get the rod rotating freely from the piston.

you have to use a pair of tools....one on each side of the rod.....use even pressure on both

Yes, understood I did that with the pickle fork using a wrench to widen the "flange". Was just the only picture I grabbed this afternoon.

Will try again tomorrow, thanks for the help thus far! Was concerned there may be a "retaining ring" in there that I somehow need to release. The rebuild kit diagram alludes to a "rod retention ring".

Thanks!

if there is indeed a "retaining ring" in there, it's gonna get destroyed when you pull the rod out...I hope you get a new one in the rebuild kit

Yah... I'll give it one more go tomorrow and if it looks like I'm SOL then I'll polish the old piston up clean and transfer the new seals and spring from the rebuild kit. I got the secondary piston out, etc so I'll media blast the casting, clean etc. pull the check valves and then replace same, put in the new pistons / seals etc. and if need be the old primary piston with the new seals transferred over.

Thanks for the help!

If you have a new piston, carefully cut the old one off.   :shruggy:

Another good idea! Off to the shop shortly so we'll see how the day goes!  :RantExplode:

Well 3 minutes in the shop and the rod popped right out with very little persuasion. Guess the oil that I sprayed in yesterday softened up the little rubber piece (that A383 pointed out) overnight and let it go today after 47 years of being in there!

I now have the check valves out, bore honed and it, the reservoir and ports covered so I can media blast the casting.

Thanks for the help guys!  :2thumbs:
