How do I make a car rust...?

Ok not a real car, a model car.   :P

I have a 69 Daytona model thats made of metal.  Its been around for a few years and is kind of beat up and missing a few small peices here and there from all the times I have moved.  Id like to modify it to look like an unrestored "cars in barns" type Daytona.  The fact that its metal means I can actually get it to rust...  or can I?  Never tried this kind of thing before.  If not I can always paint it on.

terrible one

I've thought about this before...I'd like to make one of those models look like my car right now. I was thinking maybe bury it in dirt and water it for a while.  :icon_smile_cool: No, really, get a metal etching product like Metal Edge from Home Depot or something. Soak the car in it for a couple of hours, then take it out and rust will probably start forming as it dries. Then spray it with water every day or so to help it rust until it's rusty enough.

Drop it in a bucket of saltwater.

Yup, really works good if you wanna use the salt you get at pet stores for salt water fish tanks. Good stores will even have real ocean salt.

There used to be a guy on the old site...I think the screen name was "Bugsy Malone" who did/does absolute wonders making model cars look old & crusty. I thought I saw him on the Conferderate GL site, but I don't see the name on the member list. Maybe he goes by something else nowdays? :shruggy:

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

hmm, interesting idea, a cars in barns model car.  I like it.

I don't know, guessing sand off any paint first where you want rust,  hopefully the car is not stainless steel, sorry if this is too obvious and doesn't help.   No one say "duh".
I like the idea of dropping it in salt water everyday, then set it outside, that's gotta work.  or have it set outside and have a little spray bottle of salt water and just keep spraying the thing each day.

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

Ha! then after it has been sitting a while after he completes the car, when it starts to rust futher then he wants it to, he can say "I'm gonna fix it up one of these days"  :smilielol:

Good call, I can use the salt for the driveway, its kills real cars...  We'll see what effect it has on a model car.

I know, how about this,  -  take a picture of it, put it on ebay selling it as one of the cars from that southern company, can't remember the name, always gets slammed for misleading ads, and say it will make a great father and son project, easy fix, then when you go look at the car again, it will be a rusted out POS.    :icon_smile_wink:

Dip it in muriatic acid for a few minutes. Take it out and leave it outside overnight - don't rinse it until you get the desired look.

There's a guy at the Pate swap meet every year that makes the diecast cars look old. He did a daytona last year that looked absolutely authentic. It was rusty, had a wheel missing and was out in the woods with bears hanging around it.

Go to the paint store and look for a small can of spray paint lebeled "rust" as the color name.

That reminds me of this photo,  Firebird on blocks with the missing wheel.
