Serious question! Has anyone ever needed or known of anyone who needed a seat belt cutter? If you had one and needed to cut your seat belt could you actually reach the tool in the glove box? I couldn't.

Troy

Good point. But if you kept it in the map pocket of the drivers door you could, maybe. i guess it depends on the severity of the accident

Has any ever tried to use their cutter on a scrap belt?? Most don't work... and especially on newer belt material.

I usually have a razor knife on/near me any way. Cheap at Harbor Freight, handy for removing car show decals from the glass, and good at stripping wiring. Seat belts wouldn't be an issue.

Not all of my cars have a console (and the diagram above shows the cutter in the glove box).

I usually have oil and washer fluid. I had a small first aid kit but used half the stuff for garage injuries (maybe I should have gotten a big one for the shop?).

With the price of seat belts, especially restoration type for 2nd gen, I'll wait.  No seatbelt cutter in my '69.    Could go a couple of days without food, need to lose 10 lbs.

Where does the diagram say or show it does not have a center console?  Hence, think about center console...Get it  :popcrn:

Gerber makes a decent one that does cut seat belts very well. It is standard issue for overseas deployments since the IED threat can end in a roll-over event. I do not carry mine when I am stateside especially when operating civilian vics.

It is not about you.

If you come across a wreck & the car is upside down & on fire, you could save a life.

I said my cars don't have a console and the diagram shows the cutter in the glove box. I didn't say anything about the car in the diagram. I'm sure it has a console but none of the items listed are shown in it. ;)

Good point. I was actually going to ask why you'd need a cutter at all but you answered that question too (can't release when there's a lot of tension on the belt).

Just pointing out many of the "issued" at alcohol ride checks and similar plastic moulded blade style belt cutters don't work. I've been making seat belt parts for TRW and Bendix, in my injection moulding plant, since 1985 and that webbing is tougher than you think!

We had heavy duty aluminum handled cutters with replaceable blades at the airport fire department.

My observation was on the basis of thinking out of the box.....the unknown in the picture is does it or does it not have a console?  Maybe or maybe not.....Getting a little philosophical on ya....but if it does thats the ideal location for the cutter....You just assumed it did not have a console hence: Not all of my cars have a console (and the diagram above shows the cutter in the glove box). You wrote that right? Basically, some of your cars don't have a cc and the one in the pic doesn't since its in the glovebox....Just saying....Like I said, lol :nana:

Beat me to it.  Yep, it's more about you coming on someone who needs it.

But in all seriousness, Be careful when you come up to any accident. Cutting folks out usually occurs in more serious accidents and in many of those the vehicle they are in may be unstable. (Granted there is lots to consider at an accident scene) Those of us arriving on scene don't need more patients. :2thumbs:

Yeah Troy, I had to cut my way out of my Dakota this summer. The seat belt got hung up and I couldnt get out. I had to use a pocket knife, which I keep in the ash tray now, within easy reach.

Funny story...I couldnt find any replacement parts, so I put in an old seat belt from my 73 roadrunner, It worked pretty good.
