How to drain gas tank

What is the best and easiest way to drain the gas tank on a 71?

I bought a siphon at a farm store with a really long hose. Worked nicely on my 70. You can also disconnect fuEl line at the pump and it let drain to the low spot.

There will almost always be some liquid gas left plus the fact that the space inside the tank will be full of fumes.  When removing the tank,drain the tank, fill it with water!! drop the tank and dump the water/gas mixture.  Flush again with water, some might say to flush with mineral spirits but that gives you 20 gallon of crap to dispose of.  Now you can do what you want.  Alternate method is to drain and put a air hose in the tank and blow air into it for a long time (hours.)  If you don't smell anything then good to go.  Safety first.

When I bought my '68, the previous owner drilled a hole in the bottom of the tank. He said he knew the insides were rusty and the tank would need replacement anyway.  So, if this is a throw away, drilling a hole is a common method salvage yards use. Seems like it would be scary using a drill as any spark could spell disaster, but I have been assured it is fine and done every day.

Its fine to drill into the tank to drain it...AS LONG AS THERE IS A FEW INCHES OF FUEL IN IT. Gas (its bloody petrol!!LOL) is actually not that easy to light in liquid form....its the vapour that burns.....hence the finer the spray from a fuel injector the more complete the burn. Don't drill onto one that's empty though (just full of vapour) or drill into the tank above the fuel level!!!!

I got a cheap plastic pump from Amazon. Harbor Freight sells the same item for even less. Hooked up the suction side to the sending unit and the discharge side into a gas can. Once it got started, I was able to establish a siphon and it drained it almost dry.
