Fender Tag Restoration

My fender tag is still in pretty good condition it has some minnor rust and some of the numbers are getting hard to read, Whats the best way to clean it and did they come from the factory painted and if so what color. Is their a company that makes fender tags. Thanks

There is a company named "Tags Backeast" that will make you one. But you will need to provide good pics of the original tag and if its unreadable or missing, copies of the broadcast sheet to get one made.

You can go through this company http://www.martiauto.com/index.html he did my fender tag and it is perfect.  You just need to email him the info and he will fax or send you a copy of the form to fill out and it is less than $100.

What could I clean my old one with and what would you use to protect it.

I think they are usually painted on the car with one screw holding it down, and lifted up to get paint under it too creating a slight crease from the screw. I'm sure many others here have more knowledge on how it was done.
WANTED: NOS or excellent condition 72-74 4 speed shifter boot for bench or centre armrest car, part number 3467755. It's a rubber boot that looks like it's sewn up leather.

I've thought a little about this. I plan on hitting mine with my glass bead blaster cabinet, then shooting it with a coat of self-etching primer and then sanding it lightly prior to having it painted with the car. After the paint dries on both I want to use a pair of stainless screws that closely match the originals to reattach the tag to the inner fender. I'll either paint the screw heads with some matching touch up paint or shoot them along with the tag. I'm a firm believer in using stainless fasteners whenever possible. It does help prevent rust because quite often it's the fasteners that start rusting first before affecting other areas.

All 3 of my cars have them and each tag is in a different condition. My '68 Charger has holes right through it in spots, but everything is still legible. The '69 is almost mint. Not even any rust starting. The F3 green is still lightly fogged over it, the lettering crisp. My '70 Coronet is all there, but started to rust. The surface was pitted. I ended up cleaning it down with lacquer thinner, neutralized the rust then sealed in paint.
