rear diff question

Once the body is back together on my car, I'm going to want to get the rear end rebuilt (489 case) so it can start becoming a roller again. The diff has 3.23s in it now, but I want it to be sure-grip and not a peg leg.

What would be involved in making it a sure grip? Do I keep the ring and pinion it's already a 3.23? I did a basic search, and it doesn't look like Mopar make a carrier (that is what I need, right?). Will I be going aftermarket? It's not a race car, so what would be best?

DrDiff will get you straight on everything. I picked up a rear end with a 742 and sure grip on Monday. I'm going through DrDiff for parts to rebuild it and install new gears.

Yes, that replaces your current open differential and you'll need the bearings. With the differential removed, your ring gear is removed from the open differential and swapped onto the Powr-Lok differential, then all that's needed is to reset the backlash that was measured before disassembly.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Cool. Thanks!

Good time to check the housing to make sure it is straight. Mine is 1/8" back on each side.

Wow! Race car?

Just a good thing to check since all the $ and effort is being put into the rest of the car. >45 years of use, possibilities of previous owners clipping curbs or who knows. If the axles are going to be out and the third member out, might as well check to make sure the tubes are straight.
