Foam Gasket Between Spindle and Backing Plate

What is the purpose of the white foam gasket between the steering knuckle and the backing plate? Is it okay to go without it?

Mopar Nut

Yes, the only problem would be replacing the spindle, the rust would weld it to the backing plate. It's like when you try to remove a stuck rear drum. The gasket is a buck at napa.

Thanks, I'll take your advice. That already happened with the gasket. One of the small bolts that holds the backing plate to the knuckle was rusted tight.

Mine were the same too, I wonder if anti-seize would be better.

The foam gasket is just a dust seal, a light film of RTV will do the same.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I've been to Napa, AutoZone and O'Reilly's and they had no clue what I was talking about and couldn't find it in their computer.

Try your local UPS store. :shruggy: They have various kinds of packing material that might be just what you are looking for.  :icon_smile_wink:

You need Felpro #13800.

Thanks for the tips guys.  BIGBLCK11, I'm looking for the gasket that goes between the spindle and the dust shield of a factory '69 disc brake set up.

Mopar Nut

I bought mine years ago part #2266890 (disc brakes are a different #) from Napa. You can make your own, they measure a 3 1/2" diameter with an inside diameter of 1 1/4" (disc brakes are 1 1/2")

::)   Thanks, I'll make my own.

I know this is an old thread but I think I found these at hooverautoparts.com.   I'm also checking with James at www.detroitmuscletechnologies to see if they have them.  If so probably a better price.  Will let you know so if anyone else is looking.

What did you use to make your own if not going with the rtv?
Wife said spend more time with me and less time with that Mopar.
I actually love being single!
