Has anyone ever seen or know of any around?  :shruggy:

I have one photo that shows the #88 used them on both sides.
Before I drill out my pair of NOS hinges, I thought I'd try to see if a set exist out there...
Maybe even the originals exist, are being used, or hanging on a wall someplace as "art".

If someone can come up with them, I'll make you a super deal on an NOS set...   :2thumbs:

Thanks.

I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

I have an Idea, since your wanting swiss cheese hinges (bad ass by the way), why not fab up a set?  You have the examples in hand, minus the holes.  That way you can hang your NOS hinges above the Mantle where they belong :)

I think that someone on this forum may know of a real race set of lightened hinges, or even the original ones.
Very possible they exist.  Don kept a lot of original parts to the car.

They would have come out of the Keokuk, Iowa area of the country.
I'd think a guy with a clone would use them, but a guy with an original car would not.
Or, they are hanging on the wall in a shop someplace...

The original photo below is the one where I can see the hinges were drilled. When shrunk in size for the forum, you can't make it out easily. Look carefully at the driver side hinge.  :2thumbs:

I would like to see the full size picture if possible.....and to I see holes drilled in the water trough on the right hand side of trunk opening?

And all the springs are gone and they just tilted the wing down to hold the trunk lid open

Nope. Nascar rules were that the deck lid and hood had to be able to remain open without 'help'.
The #88 met the rules like any other Daytona race car.

The photo is from a Lockheed brochure, touting the advantages of the Model 417 data recorder. You can read the entire brochure towards the end of this article in Allpar.

I scanned the original and tried to play with the lighting on it to see the holes better. Best I could do revealed a dozen in the area seen. As far as the holes on the right side trunk gutter, not many folks know that originally, Daytonas were to have had bolted in wing supports.  Back in a spring 2012 issue of MoPar collector's Guide, there was an article about a street Daytona that had them.  As we know, spot welds are cheaper than nuts and bolts.
When it was upgraded from a 500 to a Daytona, the #88 tried the bolted in supports but when they were not up to the task of 200 mph, hand made aluminum "wing washers" were made, along with aluminum pipes that ran to the trunk floor.

Bingo!    :2thumbs:

Can you share any additional info?  I can see the 'washer' has other holes in it. Hmmm -  :shruggy:

I'll email a few more photos - ever since I changed PC's last year, the application I used to use for photo compression (MS Paint) doesn't seem to be able to shrink a photo down to below 200KB without it becoming the size of an avatar.   :rotz:

Off topic but is there a thread anywhere on how you found the 88. I remember an article with the pictures but can't seem to find the mag.

Articles in MoPar Collector's Guide, MoPar Muscle, Racing Milestones, "Rare Finds" book by Jerry Heasley and the Steve Lehto book that recently came out about the wing cars.
