I'm here in Auburn, IN and very interested in bidding on this 1970 Superbird RM23U0A175691.
Does anyone have any history on this car? There is no specific info other than new paint, original interior and original tires but nothing on the drivetrain. Does anyone know if this car has matching numbers and if there is any documentation with this car? If the forum has no info I'm going to try to ask an auction rep for more info. Auction estimate is $140-180,000 but I'm not paying that crazy price. Any help greatly appreciated. Love to see it on my empty trailer headed back to Indy.
Thanks
Gerald

If you are there and the car is there, can't you inspect it before you bid on it?
Get under it and check the numbers. Am I missing something here??

Galevin

You can probably tell from my post count I have just joined this forum. I don't know where to check for the engine number. And what about the tranny and rear end? Can all these numbers be seen from crawling under the car?
I'd love to buy this car but would be sick if the drivetrain, esp the engine, did not match. Any help greatly appreciated. Gerald

Galevin

Data plate.  Bottom right number 175691 matches number thru drivers side window. Is this data plate real or a reproduction?

charger chris

The drive tran has number on them. Moter by oil pan center you should see a pad with the numbers and tran would be by the pan too. Make sure you have a flash light with you. As far as the rear end all can do is look at it and try to fiver it out if it's been changed out.
i am a fair person and up frount person and try to help if i can. i love my mopars thats. all i ever owned first car was my 69 charger at the age of 15.

According to the Superbird decoding page
http://aerowarriors.com/sftd.html
C16 denoting console should be on the 4th row. On the plate above its on the 3rd row.
Any problems here?

WINGIN IT

Console could have been added some time in its lifetime.
If you can't verify engine and tranny match, you could bid on it assuming it's a non-matching number's car.

Galevin

I guess the engine vin and tranny vin are on the passenger side underneath. Easy to find?
Also will look for the vin on the truck lip. I will keep the forum informed as I assume the car will be auctioned this afternoon. Auction over at 6pm. I will keep looking for your comments.

What about that data plate? Does it look original?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Don't know the car but 140 is not a totally out of line price. The market is carrying that now. When I called hagerty last week to make a policy change on another car we reviewed coverage on mine and they have recorded numerous sales (>10) in the last 18 months averaging higher than this, so you might want to reevaluate your idea of reasonable pricing. After talking with them I raised the value of mine by $20k to 140 and mine is not numbers matching.

This car was wrecked new with 3,350 miles on it.   Safe to assume the mileage is correct.    I think it was the drivers side.  And it was the entire side.   A friend owned the car about 15 years ago while it was still wrecked.   Had great paperwork with it too.  Even the tow bill from the wreck.
Caution.... Low flying aircraft.

I was in second place at $135k. The winner was determined to own this car.
I knew it was hit in the front left. Didn't know the entire side was wrecked.
Happy I did not buy this car. The low mi was over shadowed by the entire side being damaged and repaired.
I would have been into this car for $148k and with the previous damage now totally disclosed I'm happy I passed.
At Auctions America, they do not allow "matching numbers" to be associated with any sale car to avoid sale disputes. And this car had NO documentation at the sale. I'm sure there's another bird out there for me.

paging mr. larry bell to the courtesy phone.

larry has a totally original bird that may be available. if you're from indy, the car is only forty miles east of there.

Held,

Many thanks for the heads up. If you are out there Larry, get in touch with me. I'm going to start looking for Larry now.
Thanks again,

That is a bummer the paperwork didn't come with it.  I might have copies of it.  The car was sold for a few hundred bucks after the wreck.   A good friend knows the cars history well.  Little late now though.

Did that car involve a fatality?   Or am I thinking of something else?
